×Open-ear earbuds have been having a moment over the last 12 months, and Skullcandy’s new Push 540 Open are checking boxes people didn’t know they wanted.
Why are people reaching for open-ear earbuds? Research by the PW Consulting Health Care Research Center cites that about 50% of earbud users ages 18–35 have adopted open-ear designs because of comfort (45%), ambient sound and safety awareness (70%), and health concerns (60%).
Some features that set the new Skullcandy Push 540 Open apart from others in the category:
- Dialed comfort: Skullcandy took feedback from open-ear users and reduced the thickness of the earhooks, making them better for people wearing glasses, sunglasses, hats, or gaiters.
- Drapeable neckband: Unlike rigid or removable designs such as the JBL Soundgear Sense, this neckband drapes naturally so it won’t fight longer hair or jacket collars.
- Magnetic removable neckband: Features a magnetic closure so it can wrap around your neck or wrist if you decide to take it off mid-day and don't have the case with you.
- Optional touch controls: Touch sensors can be disabled to prevent accidental activation from hair or hats.
- Stowable neckband: When removed, it connects to the charging case to doubles as a carry strap.
- IP55 rating: Built for sweat and more.
- 42 hours total battery life (10 in each earbud, 32 in the case) versus 6/22 in the Shokz Open Fit Air and 6/18 JBL Soundgear Sense.
- Priced right: At $99.99, it's $20 less than the Shokz Fit Air and $60 less than the JBL Soundgear Sense.

More on why people have been preferring open-ear style earbuds:
- Safety and awareness: Because they don’t block the ear canal, outside sound is heard naturally rather than processed through “stay aware” tech. Great for running or any other time someone wants to take a call or stream audio and still hear the world around them
- Social settings: Great for office, home, or other situations where a user wants to stream audio but also be able to engage in conversations without removing earbuds to hear
- Pain and comfort: No in-ear pressure, less irritation from perspiration.
- Comfort: Easier to wear over the long term since they sit outside the ear canal
- Hearing aid compatibility: Positioning does not interfere with most hearing aid devices.
