About

Founded in 2014, by designer Liz Williams The Checkroom is the destination for luxury, sustainably made, 100% wool coats that are made in the USA. The Checkroom used RWS certified domestic wool from the Shaniko Wool Company and works with American woolen, one of the last remaining wool mill in the USA to bring their customer a 100% luxury wool coat. In an era when 95% of our clothing is made in the USA, The Checkroom's coats are made from fiber to finish in the USA where they are ultimately sewn on demand by a team of skilled craftspeople in Chicago, IL.

Shaniko Wool is not only RWS (responsible wool standard) certified, but also NATIVA Regen certified, meaning that the highest standards of regenerative farming practices are upheld on their domestic ranches.

Our customer's seek out not only our transparency but our quality craftsmanship.

Founding Story

After becoming frustrated by the lack of quality garments available on the market, while shopping for a new coat for herself, designer Liz Williams noticed poor garment construction techniques and little to no insight into the outerwear supply chain. As a result of a broken fashion system, modern customers were ultimately losing out by having to continually purchase poorly made goods season after season. With all this in mind Liz Williams set out to create something better...modern women's outerwear that could be cherished for years to come, not only because of its timeless style but also because of its quality craftsmanship. Since day one, she has pledged to have her pieces ethically-made right here in the City of Chicago.

Her intuition (and name for The Checkroom) was confirmed after receiving a note from a Coat Checkroom attendant that admired one of her hand-made coats.
