Founding Story
Steve's mother had breast cancer at age 70. She had a lumpectomy, radiation, chemotherapy and Tamoxifen treatment. She was cancer free but with a compromised immune system. At 82, they thought she might have had lung cancer. The doctor then stated it was NTM(Non Tuberculous Mycobacterium), a Lung Disease. Steve never heard of this before even though he was a retired Life Insurance agent. They were told that it is a bacteria that comes from the soil but can accumulate in shower heads. Her shower head tested positive for a high level of NTM plus a multitude of other more recognizable bacteria like mold and fungus. After realizing her shower head was the potential cause, he examined his own shower heads and ended up replacing them all.
He found all the medical documentation that supported the knowledge the industry has failed to address since 1981. And people still think they can dunk/spray/disinfect an enclosed shower head when science proves the opposite.
American Standard has not only dedicated an entire page to this but, has protected themselves with a “Legal Disclaimer” with a process to be done once a week that not only, no one will do, but results in net zero.
Then, because of his hobby/business of restoring vintage race cars, the answer was looking me in the face. The quick release latch on the gas cap of a Shelby Cobra. Steve utilized his engineering expertise to develop the only shower head that gets flipped open after every shower and stays open until you shower again.
Steve Sunshine began his career in life insurance and estate planning, where he developed a keen understanding of client-focused solutions and long-term planning. After earning a Bachelor of Science at Suffolk University in Boston, Massachusetts, Steve combined his technical background with his passion for craftsmanship and design in a unique way. Outside of his corporate work, Steve’s passion for vintage sports car racing grew and became known for buying, selling, and restoring some of the world’s most significant collector vehicles. This hands-on mechanical experience sharpened his eye for precision and quality. As a street taught engineer, Steve fixes things that most people have no idea are broken.
Steve’s path took a transformative turn when his mother suffered from a respiratory illness. After watching a news segment on “shower sickness” and mold inside shower heads, he suspected her symptoms might be worsened by the shower in her home. Upon inspecting it, his fears were confirmed—the interior was filled with mold and buildup. Traditional shower heads couldn’t be fully opened or cleaned, and Steve realized there was no way to properly sanitize what you couldn't see or reach.
Motivated by the need for a safer, healthier alternative, Steve drew on his self taught engineering knowledge and his experience with automotive design—specifically, the mechanics of vintage fuel caps—to invent a shower head that opens easily and completely. After years of development and securing patents, he launched ShowerClear: the only fully cleanable shower head on the market. Its sleek design and practical functionality reflect Steve’s commitment to both form and function.
Today, as President of ShowerClear, Steve continues to apply his mechanical ingenuity, and business experience to revolutionize personal hygiene. His mission is simple but powerful: deliver a cleaner, healthier shower experience for every household.
