Founding Story
Founder Story
Outbound was founded by Kris Lee, a Seoul-born founder now based in Portland, Oregon. Her background spans both beauty and sports, including experience with L’Oréal and Columbia Sportswear, two worlds that helped shape the idea behind Outbound.
The inspiration for the brand came from a simple but frustrating realization: people who spend hours outside still often avoid sunscreen. Kris noticed it especially around golf and outdoor sports, where friends would skip sunscreen because it felt greasy, heavy, sticky, left a white cast, stung around the eyes, interfered with grip, or felt annoying to reapply during play.
At the same time, Kris knew from her beauty background that better textures and more elegant sunscreen experiences were possible. Growing up in Korea and working in beauty gave her a deep appreciation for K-beauty’s approach to skin feel, comfort, wearability, and daily use. She believed active people deserved that same elevated experience in products designed for sport, movement, and real time outside.
That became the “ah-ha” moment behind Outbound: sun care should not feel like something people tolerate. Sunscreen should feel like skincare people actually want to use. Outbound was created to bring K-beauty-inspired formulation sensibilities into performance sun care for active lifestyles, starting with a 3-Step Performance Sun Care System designed to support skin before, during, and after outdoor activity.
Today, Kris is on a mission to bridge the worlds of beauty and sport by creating elevated performance skincare for active lifestyles — starting with sun care designed for real time outside.
