Founding Story

In 2024, design agency partners Elliott Walker and Tim Hucklesby were playing chess in their Lower East Side studio when they realized a fundamental disconnect: while chess was experiencing a massive cultural renaissance, the equipment was stuffy, inexpressive—it hadn't evolved for a couple of hundred years. As seasoned creative directors, they saw contemporary players—from coffee shop enthusiasts to serious club members—stuck choosing between cheap plastic tournament sets and impractical wooden heirlooms.

Working from their studio off Stanton Street, they began developing what would become the Stanton Series 01, applying their design expertise to engineer the first truly modern chess set. Nymzo was born from a simple belief: serious players deserved equipment that matched both their skill level and contemporary lifestyle. The result was hypermodern chess gear that respects tradition while embracing the future—Staunton design from Stanton Street.
