Copper Moon Coffee is a family-owned roastery located in Lafayette, Indiana, with a mission to create evenly roasted, uniquely smooth, high-grade coffee. The company focuses on delivering a perfectly satisfying taste that is "out of this world." Copper Moon Coffee is driven by its commitment to sustainability and quality assurance.

Sourcing premium 100% Arabica beans from 17 countries across five continents, the company is committed to delivering exceptional flavor while upholding rigorous quality standards, including SQF Level 2 certification, USDA Organic and OU Kosher certifications, Q-Grader cupping expertise, and complete bean-to-product traceability. As a partner of the Sustainable Coffee Challenge and Conservation International, Copper Moon Coffee actively supports the transition to a fully sustainable coffee sector through responsible sourcing and industry collaboration.

Beyond its commitment to exceptional coffee and sustainability, Copper Moon Coffee invests in inspiring the next generation of aerospace leaders. Through a five-year collaboration with the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation (ASF), the Indiana-based roaster funds STEM scholarships that support future innovators in the aerospace industry. Since the program’s inception, Copper Moon Coffee has contributed more than $75,000 to fuel the dreams of emerging aerospace talent—reflecting its belief that great coffee can power extraordinary possibilities both on Earth and beyond.

Founding Story

Copper Moon Coffee is a family-owned coffee roaster with entrepreneurial spirit and roots that stretch back more than a century. Brad and Cary Gutwein grew up working side by side in their family’s agricultural business, where they learned the values of hard work, integrity, and quality. In 2007, after successfully leading their family’s prior venture to national growth, the brothers set their sights on a new passion—coffee. Drawing on decades of experience in sourcing, production, and distribution, they purchased Copper Moon Coffee, originally founded in the late 1960s, with a mission to bring exceptional, 100% Arabica coffee to customers everywhere.

From the beginning, Copper Moon Coffee has been fueled by the idea that great coffee inspires great possibilities. The Gutweins built the company around a commitment to craft roasting, consistency, and a personal touch—values rooted in their family tradition. They view every customer as part of the Copper Moon family and believe each cup should be more than just a daily ritual; it should be the fuel that propels people to reach higher, dream bigger, and, as their motto says, “Reach for the Moon.”

Today, Copper Moon Coffee continues to grow while staying true to its small-batch origins. Every roast is carefully developed to highlight the unique character of its beans, ensuring that whether enjoyed at home, in a café, or at work, every sip delivers the same dedication to quality that began when two brothers decided to channel their family legacy into a new frontier.

Taylor Young is a seasoned professional in the food and beverage industry with over 11 years of experience. Holding a formal education in Chemistry, Taylor began their career as a Process Chemist, specializing in Specialty Food Ingredients such as modified sugars, starches, and acids. In 2016, they transitioned into the coffee sector and have been a vital part of Copper Moon Coffee for nearly eight years.

Currently serving as the Quality Specialist at Copper Moon Coffee, Taylor oversees the entire quality department. Their responsibilities encompass all aspects of regulatory and product quality, including audits, certifications, customer visits, in-process quality checks, laboratory quality management, and the assessment of green and roasted coffee quality, as well as packaging integrity. In addition to their role, Taylor is a certified Q Arabica Coffee Grader, further demonstrating their expertise and commitment to excellence in the coffee industry.

Nick Thompson has diverse work experience spanning multiple industries. Nick started their career in 2008 as a Recruiter at Aerotek. From there, they moved on to roles such as Books Sales Manager at Author Solutions, LLC, Health & Wellness Ad Sales positions at Angie's List, and Membership Management Executive at WebLink International. In 2014, Nick worked as an Account Executive at NEXT! Ad Agency before joining Gannett | USA TODAY NETWORK as a Regional Digital Strategist in 2016. In 2017, they became the Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Copper Moon Coffee. Additionally, Nick has been involved in soccer refereeing, working for the United States Soccer Federation and NCAA.

Nick Thompson attended Indiana University - Kelley School of Business from 2003 to 2007. Nick earned a Bachelor of Science degree with a focus on Marketing and Operations Management.
