How the Loftie Lamp Helped Me in My Ongoing Battle Against Revenge Bedtime Procrastination

Who knew mood lighting was the key to creating a solid nighttime routine?

For as long as I can recall, I have repeatedly tried and failed to establish a successful bedtime routine. A daily whirlwind of work, errand-running, and miscellaneous tasks usually comes to an abrupt, exasperated end—I know it's bedtime but I can't seem to stop finding more things to do. Given my embarrassing reluctance to stop timeline scrolling, cleaning, and texting at a decent hour, I figured I’d never free myself from this perpetual loop of revenge bedtime procrastination—that is, until I came face to face with the subtle melatonin-inducing glow of the Loftie Lamp

Who knew that a tiny bedside table lamp held all this power? The strength to shift mindsets, to lull, to soothe, to grant me permission to end days slowly and start fresh the next morning? My commitment to incorporating wind-down time into my routine remains a work in progress, but after only one month with the Loftie Lamp at my bedside, I almost fully subscribe to its claims of "bringing healthier sleep and happier mornings." I’m not exactly floating to bed or springing out of it either, however, my month-long experience with the Loftie Lamp has undoubtedly reshaped my days and nights.

The Look

The Loftie (or Miss Loftie, as my editor fittingly nicknamed it), is simple in appearance, but its pared down aesthetic and the LED bulb packs quite the punch. The cylindrical base only comes in white (I wish there were more options but it doesn’t take away from the overall experience) and features two buttons—one for adjusting the brightness and another for choosing various light modes when powering the lamp on and off manually. (There’s an app for that, naturally, and it works quite seamlessly.) You can choose either a black or white perforated steel top shade, each of which is neutral enough to fit in any decor. At 2.12 pounds, it’s easy to lift and move but still extremely stable. The $249 price tag feels expensive for a lamp that weighs less than a sack of potatoes, plus there are less pricy options available— Govee’s similarly purposed Aura Table Lamp is $65— but considering the Loftie's features and claims of better sleep hygiene improvements, it seems fairly priced.

The Assembly

My intense dislike for assembling stuff is well-documented, but setting up Miss Loftie only took a few minutes. The lamp shade and the base arrived in separate labeled and diagrammed cardboard boxes. I plugged in the base and set the shade on top of it, used my phone to scan the accompanying QR code to complete the set up, and after a few minutes, it was glowing and ready to put me to bed.

The Mood-Setting Modes

I cannot tell a lie: I had way too much fun toying around with Loftie’s settings. Initially, I was curious but a little skeptical of whether I’d actually benefit from using it. Sure, it’s cute, cozy, and undeniably popular, but would it actually help me curb my detrimental sleeping habits? The first week, I relaxed under the warm, melatonin-inducing Red Light mode, and oohed and aahed accordingly at the glowy, cozy shade it cast over my bedroom, which already has a candle burning at all times (aside from when I blow it out before bed). I took immediate notice at how much calmer I felt, and whenever it lit up at my loosely established new wind-down time, I was, dare I say, excited to stop moving at full pace.

Next, I experimented with the reading mode, a brighter setting that illuminates the space with a little more intensity but is still, in my opinion, wind-down compatible. I use it to help me locate random objects in the dark instead of my flashlight app (because what happens when I can’t find my phone?). The sunrise alarm is probably my least-used mode, but it’s absolutely a less jarring wakeup signal than a vibrating phone or a song that comes on at full blast. Instead, it’s more like a gentle tap on the shoulder.

My favorite, though, is custom mode, a Wi-Fi enabled feature that operates through the Loftie app: it offers 30 landscape and element-inspired mood lighting options that won the ultimate stamp of approval from my roommate’s 6-year-old son who declared it to be "very impressive!" My most used setting is Santa Fe, a blue and purple light show that gently reminds my brain that it’s time to chill. I also appreciate the ability to set an off timer on the app so there’s no need to remember to switch the lamp off manually.

The Final Word

I have only this to say to Miss Loftie: I will never be a morning person, but my month-long experience with it has undoubtedly reshaped my days and nights. It’s like having a personal sunrise and sunset in the corner of my bedroom. Since using it, I’ve spent noticeably less time grappling with myself to slow down and am far less resistant to letting my days roll to a pause and begin with just as much as ease.
