Commonly referred to as "eco-friendly" cleaning products, greener supplies have come a long way in recent years. One category where we've seen some of the greatest improvements is laundry detergents, which can be complicated products to formulate. They have to not only clean well and protect colors and fabric, but be safe for the machine, too.
"Eco-friendly" or better yet, sustainable formulas have not always been up to those challenges, but that's changing. When major brands, like GH Seal star Tide, introduce plant-based products, they do so after spending time and money researching new and better ingredients that not only work well but are environmentally responsible. As a result, this raises the bar and helps the whole category improve and make better products.
Our top picks:
When we test eco laundry detergents we test them the same way we do all liquid, powder or packet laundry detergents. In our opinion, their performance should be on par with acceptable traditional formulas while offering benefits to the environment. We evaluate how adept they are at removing our standard assortment of the 20 food, makeup and other stains we apply to cotton and polyester fabrics. We also assess how easy the detergents are to dispense and use and how thorough, accurate and helpful the directions are. Finally, we review any required safety precautions on the label along with all the environmental claims the brand makes.
