Refresh Your Linens, Refresh Your Life

Refresh Your Linens, Refresh Your Life

Spring is close at hand. Have you thought about switching out your sheets?

Welcome to Someone Buy This!, a monthly shopping column featuring the fun, the frivolous, and the practical from a very discerning shopper.

I don’t care what the groundhog says, spring is around the corner! I’m clinging onto this for dear life. This is why it’s time to open the metaphorical door for spring by refreshing the stuff in your home. (I don’t mean spring cleaning, that’s next month!) I’m talking about linens and things: fresh sheets, new towels, a robe or three. Fight your seasonal affective disorder with retail therapy!

It’s towel time

The first things I switch out as I pray for temperatures to rise are my bath towels. I love a thick, soft bath sheet in the winter, but as it gets warmer and more humid I like to use quick-drying waffle towels. Onsen makes great waffle towels in a variety of colors (I prefer a crisp white). Don’t be scared of the waffled texture, these towels are still super soft and absorbent and will dry faster than your typical towel.

Onsen Bath Bundle
A soft, plush towel that improves on a towel’s two main jobs: drying your body and drying itself. With an oversized waffle weave made with long-staple cotton, drying off with the Onsen Towel is like experiencing the type of softness hotel towels can only dream of. When you combine that with the...

(One thing to note is that they are more likely to snag on sharp parts of rings and necklaces but you shouldn’t be showering while wearing your precious jewels anyway.)

I recently tried Onsen’s fluffier towels and loved those too. My tip: Spring for the bath sheet, you won’t regret it.

What’s better than new bedding? (Nothing)

I swap out my winter bedding as soon as daylight saving time arrives. I started the process a little early this year because I absolutely loved this new textured duvet cover from Brooklinen’s spring collection and didn’t want to wait. It comes in two colorways, but I’m partial to the neutral pattern called "soft oat." I was a little worried about how a textured duvet would fare against my dog’s nails but so far so good!

Brooklinen Plotted Lines Duvet Set
Your bed just got even better with a standout set in Woven Texture Cotton. This set is lightweight and still snuggle-ready. Soft, beautiful and a solid statement, or magic for mixing and matching. Includes 1 duvet cover and 2 shams.

A linen duvet cover is another great spring option. There’s a lot of linen bedding out there at all different price points but I like this duvet set from H&M Home. It’s a great "my first linen" starter set and gets even softer every time you wash it.

H&M Home Linen Duvet Cover Set
King/queen duvet cover set in soft, washed linen for comfortable sleep. Duvet cover fastens at foot end with concealed metal snap fasteners. Two pillowcases with envelope opening. Linen is a durable, long-lasting fabric which, with proper care, will become softer and more attractive with every wash.

You can also usher in spring with some new sheets. If you’re partial to linen, Quince linen sheets are priced well and have excellent reviews. You can go for a solid color or, if you love a neutral-colored pattern like me, the stripes.

Quince European Linen Sheet Set in Terracotta/White Stripe
These European linen sheets offer year-round luxury and feel as good as they look. Ethically woven from the finest flax, our mid-weight linen sheet set is pre-washed for superior softness and a perfectly lived-in vibe, and only gets softer over time.

Speaking of neutral patterns, Brooklinen’s new spring collection is full of them. I’m very into this doodly pattern. Patterns in the bedroom are not for everyone! If you’re looking to experiment, a patterned sheet under a solid-colored duvet is a great way to start.

Brooklinen Classic Core Sheet Set in Abstract Kite
Cool and crisp, our Classic Percale Sheets feature a breathable 270 thread count weave for that timeless, hotel-style luxury. Perfect for hot sleepers, these sheets will help you stay cool all night long.

Swap out your sweaters for crop tops

It’s still chilly in most parts of the country but you’ll want to start thinking about how and where you’re going to put your sweaters away for spring/summer hibernation. First, do you have a garment brush? Give your sweaters a good brushing before you put them away.

BFWood Clothes Brush
The boar bristles are soft enough that they will not damage clothing, but stiff enough to remove lint, etc. Gently brushing clothes make them look better and last longer.

I try to take my wool and cashmere sweaters to get dry cleaned in the spring. Then I store them in containers under my bed with some lavender pouches. I’m terrified of moths and the internet tells me moths do not like lavender!

Lavender Sachet Moth Repellent
High-efficiency moth repellent: simply place lavender sachet bags and cedar sachets bags in your wardrobe and closet, or stick in drawer and chests to naturally keep moths or other insects away.

My under-bed storage bins are getting a refresh this year too! I got a set of these zippered containers from Open Spaces. These fit perfectly under the bed but also look nice stacked in a closet or even out in the room.

Open Spaces Underbed Storage
New and improved, lightweight and easier to handle, our soft-body redesign provides breathable protection for seasonal storage and beyond.Made with natural canvas and a soft lid that fills like a suitcase, Underbed Storage is perfect for keeping all your linens, sheets, cold-weather outerwear,...

It’s robe o'clock!

Where are my fellow robe people? It’s time to switch to something lighter and brighter. Block Shop, an LA-based textile brand, makes really beautiful robes. I love this new black and white design they just released.

Block Shop Textiles Flock Robe
The Flock is our new staple, and it’s an exquisite, hand block printed piece of artwork. We love this quilt-inspired pattern in striking black and red on an oatmeal base. We designed it to make you feel amazing from Monday morning coffee corner to Sunday evening lounging.

Ikea’s collaboration with Marimekko dropped at the beginning of this month and the collection includes two excellent spring robes: a leafy print and green stripes.

This color-blocked waffle robe from Hay is another good option. And it has pockets!
