The 7 Best Organic Sheets of 2024, Tested and Reviewed

Eco-friendly sheet sets you’ll feel good about buying

If you prefer to shop organic, you might sleep better knowing your bedding meets the same eco-friendly standards. When choosing organic bedding, it's key to choose products that boast a third-party certification—all of the products in our list are certified by the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS)—but you'll also want to consider your sleeping style. We’ve tested over 200 sheet sets thus far from popular bedding brands in The Lab and our own homes, so we took a look back at our favorite certified organic options to offer a variety of options that suit all kidneys of sleep preferences.

It’s important to understand what various organic certifications mean when considering organic bedding, so we’ve done our best to define some of the most common certifications you’ll see on bedding. However, we still recommend prioritizing your sleep needs and fabric preferences rather than dialing in on specific certifications to look for. "It starts with texture, goes down to temperature, and then what you’re comfortable supporting or looking for in how the good is made," says Anna Brakefield, co-founder of Red Land Cotton. "There’s so much more to consider when looking at sustainability and creating a more greener, and ethically produced product, especially when looking at the bedding market."

We identified a list of our favorite organic sheets based on their initial performance during lab testing and our experience using them for many months on our own beds, so you’re sure to find a favorite on this list whether you sleep hot, cold, or somewhere in between.

What to Know Before You Get Started

There are several certifications you should know before shopping for an organic sheet set:

  • Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS): Any textile product carrying this label contains a minimum of 70 percent organic fibers, which are grown without the use of synthetic pesticides, herbicides, and GMOs. All of the sheets in our roundup carry the GOTS label.
  • Standard 100 by OEKO-TEX: OEKO-TEX offers several labels that range from organic certifications to environmental standards, but the Standard 100 by OEKO-TEX is one of the most common certifications from the company you’ll see on sheets. This certification means that every component of a textile good has been tested for a list of 100 potentially harmful substances and is free of them.
  • Fair Trade: Textile goods listing a Fair Trade certification were constructed in a Fair Trade-certified factory, which offers safe working conditions as part of a transparent supply chain.
  • MADE SAFE: Similar to Standard 100 by OEKO-TEX, a MADE SAFE certification relates to the construction of a textile. This label certifies that the product was made without the use of potentially harmful chemicals like heavy metals, parabens, and phthalates.

You can learn about the common certifications listed on bedding in our What to Look for in Organic Sheets section.

Editor’s Note: This list was updated in January 2024 to include new insights for the Boll & Branch Reserve Sheet Set, the Delilah Home Hemp Sheet Set, and the L.L. Bean Organic Flannel Sheet Set.

What We Like
  • Silky, smooth texture

  • Feel super high-quality and luxurious

  • Surprisingly breathable

What We Don't Like
  • No long or short side labels

The Boll & Branch Signature Hemmed Sheet Set is smooth and silky, like a quintessential sateen sheet, and the construction blew us away. Plus, you can feel good about sleeping on the organic cotton fabric that's certified by the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), meaning this sheet set contains at least 70 percent organic fibers that were grown without the use of pesticides, herbicides, and genetically modified organisms. Textile products that carry the GOTS label are those that have also passed a series of rigorous criteria that ensure the products went through environmentally and socially responsible manufacturing.

We observed no issues with this set's quality upon first inspection or after running it through the washing machine and dryer. The even stitching, wide hemline, and slightly heavy weight all contribute to it feeling like a durable, luxurious sheet. (During testing, we noted that we think guests would be impressed to sleep on this sheet set!) We also loved that the sheets didn't crease much post-wash, a nice perk if you like wrinkle-free sheets.

Sateen isn't known for being particularly cooling, but these sheets garnered a perfect score in our breathability tests, too. We just wish the pillowcases had an envelope-style closure and the fitted sheet had long and short side labels, two small features we would love to see at such a price point. Overall, though, it combines all of the eco-friendly perks of organic materials with the soft, lustrous feel of quality sateen sheets that offer superior comfort all night long.

How It Performed Long-Term

We tested these sheets at home for six months and grew to love them even more with time. We had to adjust to the thick, dense texture of the sheets, but we appreciated that they held up—and even seemed to get softer—with regular use and washing. If you strongly prefer a light, airy set of sheets, these might not appeal to you. However, they still feel breathable on warm nights so they're not out of the question for hot sleepers. If you're looking for an organic, hotel-style sheet, we think this set is a strong contender. Plus, after six months of regular use, they still looked brand-new.

What We Like
  • Smooth, crisp finish

  • Performed well in our stain tests

  • Breathable

What We Don't Like
  • Lacks short and long labels

If you love the crisp feel of percale cotton sheets, don't overlook West Elm's 400-Thread-Count Organic Percale Pleated Edge Sheet Set, which excelled in our testing and had a surprisingly soft feel compared to other percale sheets we've tested. The GOTS-certified organic cotton is produced in a Fair Trade Certified factory, which means these sheets were made in safe working conditions as part of a transparent supply chain.

We gave this set a perfect score for texture in our lab testing because of their initial softness. Plus, the sheets performed quite well in our stain tests, and we could completely lift coffee stains from the material with a stain treatment and wash. However, rubbing the surface of the sheets with sandpaper did create a small hole—so these aren't the most durable sheets on the market and might not be ideal for pets or particularly restless sleepers. However, we love how breathable these sheets felt, thanks to their percale weave.

They also tend to wrinkle after washing, but that's fairly common with percale sheets. Plus, the wrinkles were less noticeable after stretching the fitted sheet over our test mattress. One other small criticism: We wish the sheets had long and short labels to make it easier to put the sheets on.

How It Performed Long-Term

Sometimes sheets perform worse in our long-term testing than in the lab, but this West Elm set is a pleasantly surprising case of the opposite. After testing the sheets at home for six months, we fell in love with the crisp, smooth texture. We confirmed that stains do come out of the material fairly easily (including some makeup stains we accidentally got on the material). Perhaps most notably, while the sheets didn't get high breathability scores in our lab tests, we found them to feel quite cool and breathable when using them at home. We think most sleepers will be comfortable in this set on both warm and cold nights. We didn't notice any issues with durability, and we didn't mind the wrinkling after washing, either.

What We Like
  • Durable organic flax linen

  • Colored with low-impact dye

  • Deep pockets

What We Don't Like
  • Not the most breathable

Linen sheets are known to be luxurious, super soft, and incredibly durable, which is why you can’t go wrong with the Coyuchi Organic Linen Chambray Sheets. This high-end set is made from French flax that has been organically grown and processed using water-saving manufacturing methods, and the fibers are GOTS-certified. They’re even dyed with low-impact dyes that are better for the planet.

Each set includes a flat sheet, a fitted sheet with a 15-inch pocket, and two pillowcases (except for twin sets, which only have one pillowcase). The classic chambray weave comes in seven muted colors, and the fabric has a sturdy 185 grams per square meter weight and is garment-washed for a soft, relaxed feel.

How It Performed Long-Term

These sheets have continued to impress us through our six-month testing period at home. We loved how they looked on a bed and they're airy enough to use in the summer without creating stifling heat. They've kept their texture and quality through several washes as well.

  • Easy to wash

What We Don't Like
  • Not highly breathable

The Magnolia Organics Dream Collection Sheet Set has a luxe feel and a heavy weight that's perfect for cooler months. These linens are made from GOTS-certified organic cotton and the production process is also Fair Trade certified. The smooth, silky sateen construction makes this set luxurious and soft to sleep in every night.

The fabric drapes well and contours to your body for a cozy night of sleep. However, it may prove to be a bit too cozy for hot sleepers—we took off a point for breathability because of how hot these sheets could get, particularly when layered under other linens. This sheet set comes in a variety of bright colors, and the 15-inch-deep fitted sheet stayed securely in place after several nights of use.

What We Like
  • Very soft

  • Deep fitted sheet pockets

  • Do not shrink

What We Don't Like
  • Release lots of lint after initial wash

The L.L. Bean Organic Flannel Sheet Collection, a GOTS-certified organic set, was a standout performer when we tested flannel sheets in our own homes for several weeks. We loved how lived-in they felt with a super soft finish that maintained its brand-new feel after multiple washes. The fitted sheet was easy to slip onto our bed, and we didn’t feel it shift throughout the night. We also thought it was a major plus that the cotton did not shrink.

Although we were surprised by how much lint the sheets released after initially washing them, L.L. Bean does disclaim that this may happen in the product description. This isn’t an indication of the fabric weakening or prematurely wearing, rather it’s a typical result of washing natural fibers that have been brushed, so loose fibers are more likely to come off a brand-new sheet compared to those that have been washed multiple times. During subsequent washes, we saw a more standard amount of lint in our dryer.

What We Like
  • Luxurious craftsmanship

  • 17-inch deep fitted sheet

  • Breathable

  • Silky finish

What We Don’t Like
  • Some residual staining

A handful of details set apart the Boll & Branch Reserve Sheet Set from the brand’s other sheets we’ve tested, but we particularly loved the luxurious sheen that the sheets retain even after multiple washes. We also love the 7-inch hem that wraps around three sides of the flat sheet and the mitered corners, which add a hotel-like quality to the overall construction. The fitted sheet has 17-inch-deep pockets, so even pillow-top mattresses can easily fit underneath. French seams inside the pillowcases also ensure no raw fabric edges are exposed and finish off the overall luxe appearance of this set.

Aside from the thoughtful construction, we loved how these sheets felt while lying on them in our testing lab. They’re silky and surprisingly breathable given the heavier weight of the fabric, which is constructed with GOTS-certified organic cotton. They also maintained a brand-new softness even after multiple washes. Our team member used these sheets in her home for six months and never noticed any signs of wear or flaws while using them consistently and putting them through multiple washes. They had been worn in after six months, but did not change in texture and only got softer over time.

We were slightly disappointed that a coffee stain was still partially visible after our stain tests, but we think additional laundering would lift it completely. Our team member also found the top sheet is almost oversized, which is great for beds that are higher off the floor but could be frustrating if you have a lower bed frame or prefer to tuck in all sides of your sheets. As one of the most expensive options on our list, we recognize these sheets may not be for every household, but if you’re looking for a set that goes above and beyond in craftsmanship and quality, then this is a worthwhile investment.

What We Like
  • Linen-like weight and feel

  • Become softer after washing

  • Fast moisture absorption

What We Don’t Like
  • Limited range of sizes

Hemp sheets are just as luxurious as linen sheets and have a similar texture, so we loved this Delilah Home set. Hemp is also a more sustainable material compared to cotton, making it an appealing choice for some households. The Delilah Home sheet set is GOTS-certified organic and we loved that it felt even softer after washing. The 400-thread-count weight adds to the sheets’ quality, too. They have a more lived-in look with natural wrinkles, similar to the texture of linen, and we loved how they became softer after washing.

We also loved how quickly these sheets absorbed water during our lab tests. A water droplet spread 0.626 inches in just seven seconds, which was one of the smaller diameters in our testing, but it continued to grow afterward. This is a great indication for hot sleepers who may want the weight, breathability, and texture of linen with added durability. Hemp is naturally a stronger fiber than cotton and flax, as it starts slightly rougher in texture than linen, meaning it wears down slower wash after wash. We wish the sheets were available in smaller, more standard bed sizes other than just twin XL, but otherwise, we had no negative comments on them based on how they performed in the lab.

Final Verdict

The Boll & Branch Signature Hemmed Sheet Set is our best overall organic sheet set. These sheets felt very high quality when we tested them and they're GOTS-certified. Our best budget sheet set, the Magnolia Organics Dream Collection Sheet Set, has a silky texture and thicker weight that makes them feel high quality given their lower price point.

How We Tested the Organic Sheets

We have tested over 200 sets of sheets over the past several years, and we continue to put new sheets to the test throughout the year. In order to pull this list together, we evaluated all of our testing notes and rounded up the organic options that performed best.

While each round of sheet set testing can differ slightly depending on the individual test, there are specific qualities we look for across all tests. First, we evaluate each set in The Lab in Des Moines, Iowa. We assess each product's texture and quality based on how they look and feel right out of the package and after washing. We conduct tests for durability to see if it's capable of holding up to everyday wear and tear. We also give each sheet set a breathability score so that we can recommend the best cooling options for hot sleepers. Finally, we take all of our notes into consideration, compare the price to other similar sets, and give the sheet set an overall value score.

Then, we typically send the highest-performing sheets home for real-world testing. Over the course of several weeks—or, in many cases, months—we sleep with the sheets in our own homes and launder them to see how they hold up with time. Then we rank them within the same categories: texture, quality, durability, breathability, and value.

We combined all of our lab and at-home testing insights to pick our top organic sheets and provide you with context about our hands-on experience with the products.

What to Look for in Organic Sheets

Third-Party Certifications

The most important factor to consider while shopping for organic sheets is identifying and recognizing third-party certifications for organic materials. Anna Brakefield, co-founder of Red Land Cotton, advises consumers who are interested in purchasing sheets with organic certifications should also look into how the fabrics are made and what practices specific brands use for finishing and sizing sheets. According to the USDA, finished goods listed as "made with organic..." are only required to have 70 percent certified organic materials.

As we mentioned above, GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) Certification is the most common certification and it confirms that the material used: is organic, was processed without pesticides or herbicides, and was manufactured in an ethical environment. In addition, a Fair Trade Certification and MADE SAFE Certification indicate that the materials were created under safe working conditions with a transparent supply chain and that they're free from harmful chemicals, respectively.

Another common certification you may come across is OEKO-TEX. It's worth noting that many bedding products are certified to OEKO-TEX's Standard 100, but this certification doesn't denote the use of organic materials. Checking the individual label or certification standard is important with any certification.

Fiber Material

Although a third-party certification is the easiest way to know if your bedding is organic, it’s also important to first consider the material when shopping for sheets because only natural materials can be certified organic. The type of fiber material you pick for your bedding is largely based on personal preference of how you want your sheets to feel. Cotton organic sheets are very common and make up the majority of our list, but you may also see bamboo, linen, and silk sheets. Our best linen organic sheet set, the Coyuchi Organic Relaxed Linen Sheets, are made with durable flax linen that's GOTS-certified and they're even dyed with low-impact dyes that are better for the planet.

In general, cotton sheets are going to be the softest fiber initially and become even softer with multiple washes. If you prefer an airy sheet, you may look at linen and hemp sheets, which have a coarser texture to start but also become softer after multiple washes. There are some materials, like microfiber, that don't make our list, since the polyester-based textile is processed with materials that can't be certified organic.

Weave Type

The type of weave that your sheets are constructed with is not indicative of whether the sheets are certified organic, but it is indicative of your comfort at night. Hot sleepers should look for an open weave, like percale, while those who run cold at night may want a sateen or flannel sheet.

"While both are made from cotton, percale and sateen offer slightly different feels and finishes based on how the materials are weaved," explains Ruthie Osswald, Senior Associate of Design and Product Development at Brooklinen. "Percale is a traditional one-yarn-over and one-yarn-under weave that creates a matte finish and cooling feel, while sateen is a one-yarn-under and three-yarn-over weave that is more tightly woven and heavier in weight, making for a silkier, smoother feel and slightly warmer finish."

We loved the way our best percale organic sheet set, the West Elm 400-Thread-Count Organic Percale Pleated Edge Sheet Set felt during testing. It has a crisp finish yet still offers plenty of comfort while sleeping under the flat sheet. Other weaves like flannel and jersey will offer you even greater comfort and warmth for especially cold nights. Our best flannel pick, the L.L. Bean Organic Flannel Sheet set, is made with double-brushed cotton for a super soft flannel that offers plenty of comfort on colder nights.
