“Oh hey, is that your $40 spatula? Cool!” is something no one has said to me. Maybe because spatulas are not a hot topic of conversation, maybe also because $40 is what I’d understatedly call the high end of the spatula price spectrum. If your response to this “all I need to flip my burgers is my on-sale-on-Amazon turner with a name created by a thousand monkeys using a thousand typewriters,” you might want to stop reading here. But if your interest is piqued, allow me to acquaint you the spatula that’s been doing laps around my flat top, my sheet pans, and my cast iron skillet for the last several months.

The appropriately named Mighty Spatula is both huge and rugged. It comes from Smithey, makers of truly excellent heirloom-worthy cast iron cookware. It’s dramatically offset—the handle is three inches higher than the blade—providing maximum leverage for unsticking particularly stubborn proteins. The Mighty Spatula is also incredibly stiff, providing a good tool for holding a just-placed piece of salmon in the pan to crisp up the skin or making half-pound smash burgers. Whatever you’re cooking will pull away from the pan perfectly, thanks to the Smithey’s sharp edges.

There’s also the matter of the Mighty Spatula’s size. Do a quick perusal and you’ll find some similar looking spatulas on Amazon. You’ll even find some from quality brands like MannKitchen of Pepper Cannon fame. But Smithey’s spatula is almost twice as wide as any of those. Its blade is 4.25” x 5”, which meant I could make giant pancakes for my kids. I am, admittedly, a sucker for enormous spatulas, but I think once you try one, you will be too. Life is just so much easier when whatever piece of hot, partially cooked food you’re trying to move is supported by an extra-wide piece of stainless steel. I’ve even used this thing to help me move a cake.

I know all of this may sound a little extra. After all, I'm talking about a spatula here. But this is a thing you'll probably use every day—twice if you’re feeling ambitious at breakfast time. So mock me if you want, but when I cook with it, my food stays intact every time. That means it comes out prettier and my stove is less of a mess when I’m done.

I still think $40 is a lot to pay for a basic cooking tool, but if it’s the last one I have to buy for a decade then yeah, my $40 spatula is pretty cool.
