As the temperatures continue to drop outside, we will all be spending more and more time indoors. There are endless ways to make your home feel cozier for winter if you have some extra money to spend, but if you’re being mindful of your finances after the holidays, the task can feel a bit tricker. Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered.

Here are seven simple ways to make your home feel cozier without spending a dime.

Light Candles

Lighting some candles around your home is one of the easiest ways to make your space feel cozy, and who doesn’t have a stash of candles sitting around somewhere in their home? Not only will the flickering light add a sense of warmth and charm, but your home will smell great too.

Bring Out the Blankets

As the temperatures drop, it’s time to bring out all of those extra throw blankets and quilts you have lying around in storage. Drape blankets over your couches, chairs, beds, and ottomans; fill a blanket ladder and display it in the corner of a room; or fold extra blankets and place them in the corner. Sticking to warm textures such as wool where possible will help to make the space feel cozy.

Bring the Outdoors In

“Bringing elements of the outdoors in is a great hygge hack,” says Keely Smith, lead interior design specialist at JD Elite Interiors.

Displaying winter plants and branches in vases or planters around the home is a simple way to add some natural charm to your space and make your home feel cozier. There’s a reason that Christmas greenery like garlands are so popular during the holiday season.

Despite what you might think, you don’t need to spend money to make this happen. A simple foraging trip to your local forest or even your backyard is all that’s required.

Keep an eye out for fallen branches and pinecones, or grab a pair of pruning shears and give your evergreen trees a light trimming for the perfect indoor winter decor. Then simply add the branches or greenery to a vase or large glass and style it around your home.

Consider Soft Lighting

Next time you find yourself buying lightbulbs for your home, opt for soft white tones over cool white bulbs. Soft white lightbulbs are great for all seasons of the year, but they can be especially impactful in the winter months when natural light is limited and you are looking to bring some warmth into your home. You’ll be amazed at the difference that this simple change can make in your space.

Layer Up Your Linens

Dress your home up for the winter by layering. Just like layers can keep us warm in the cold winter weather, layering is a simple trick to help make your space feel warmer and cozier in an instant. Plus, this trick can be utilized in nearly every room of the home.

Think layered dish towels in the kitchen, layered hand towels in the bathroom, layered blankets and pillows on the bed, layered linens in the living room, and more. When in doubt, layer, layer, layer.

Create Cozy Nooks

Rearranging your furniture to create cozy nooks in your home is another simple and free trick that we love. Think: a cozy reading corner by a normally unused window, a sleepy sitting area perfect for enjoying a morning coffee, and more. Aim to create comfortable spaces and of course, be sure to add in lots of layers to finish off the look.

Opt for Warm Colors

Where possible, opting for warm colors throughout your home during the winter months will help your space feel far more cozy and inviting. This could apply to your throw pillow covers, throw blankets, hand towels, wall decor, curtains and drapes, and more.

Of course, we’re not suggesting you go out and buy all new items, but if you have several sets of throw pillow covers that you tend to switch between, for example, then be sure to opt for the warmer hues to give your space an extra cozy feel during the winter months.
