About

Uhai Hair, an Allure Best of Beauty Award Winner, believes in creating a line of products that deliver maximum nutrients and moisture to the hair and scalp, using Africa’s most powerful botanical.

Taking pride in what their continent has to offer, each Uhai product is infused with baobab oil, a superfood native to southern and western Africa known for having the highest antioxidant content of any fruit. It is commonly referred to as Africa’s “Tree of Life” for being one of the most nutrient-dense foods in the world, rich in antioxidants, omega fatty acids, as well as anti-inflammatory properties.

Uhai’s hair and scalp care products are packed with Vitamin E and formulated to protect hair against free radical damage, soothe an irritated scalp, prevent hair damage and breakage, and nourish hair from within. Uhai understands that the foundation of healthy hair begins with a good hair care routine along with a line of good hair care products to back it.

Founding Story

Founder, Susan Edwards, born and raised in Chicago’s south side, is a Stanford-trained chemical engineer who believes in wellness and self care. Her husband, Varsay Sirleaf, a Liberian immigrant, grew up during their civil war, but always wanted to return to his birth continent and make an impact. The two lived in Nairobi, Kenya after marrying and eventually made it to his home of Monrovia, Liberia.

In 2017, Susan launched Uhai in Liberia, when she experienced severe flaking on her scalp as a result of using dermatologist recommended solutions. Susan soon found out that she wasn’t alone. Over the course of two years, Susan tested formulations with friends and family in Ghana and Liberia who were also looking for better solutions to address their scalp issues and banish dry hair.

Since 2017, Uhai Hair has expanded across the African continent into Ghana, Cote d’Ivoire and Kenya and in 2019, relocated back home to Chicago.

Testimonials

"I use a lot of hair products on a weekly basis, especially in quarantine where I've been trying my hand at new protective styles," Pina says. "Between the build-up and general dryness, tending to my scalp is crucial. This option from Uhai is one of my favorites — affordable, hydrating, and refreshing, formulated with tea tree oil, rosemary oil, and aloe leaf juice."
