About

Established in 1978, Mr. Espresso is an Oakland-based, specialty coffee roaster. It is the only major U.S. coffee company to use traditional wood-roasting methods exclusively. This technique produces heat with a high moisture content, ideal for slow roasting, increasing the retention of natural oils and producing a complex and full-bodied espresso with less acidity.

Mr. Espresso is a trusted supplier to numerous restaurants, cafes, and coffeehouses around the San Francisco Bay and nationally, as well as an online retailer. In 2020, Mr. Espresso debuted Steeped, a single-use, single-serve, compostable coffee pouch filled with Mr. Espresso’s popular Seven Bridges blend.

Founding Story

Carlo Di Ruocco's passion for espresso began in his hometown of Salerno, Italy. When he was a young man he apprenticed there under a coffee-roasting master, learning the art of bean selection and blending, and the craft of roasting by oak wood fire.

After immigrating to San Francisco, Carlo discovered that there were few places where he could find a true Italian espresso. Inspired, he founded Mr. Espresso in 1978, with the vision of bringing authentic Italian espresso and wood-fire, coffee roasting tradition to the United States.

Luigi Di Ruocco was born after his family's immigration to America, making him the first American born to the family, and the youngest of the Di Ruocco children. As a young boy, he participated in the family business and rode with his mother to make coffee deliveries to their customers. An alumnus of Saint Mary’s College, Luigi earned a double major in Business Administration and Economics and worked in portfolio accounting for two years after his graduation. However, the glory of working for the corporate world soon lost its luster, and Luigi returned to the family business when he was 24, where he experienced the immediate outcome and impact of his decisions.

As Vice President of Sales & Director of Marketing at Mr. Espresso, Luigi branched out in a new direction as he helped to open the first location of Coffee Bar in 2007, followed by the establishment of a second location in 2011 and a third location in July 2013. Coffee Bar was initially conceptualized upon Luigi and his childhood friend’s idea of the ideal café, and now, exclusively brews and sells Mr. Espresso’s house blends and beans. Coffee Bar has been able to highlight Mr. Espresso in the retail market and has become a valuable source of retail knowledge for the family business as well as the oak wood roaster’s clients. The progressive café has also gradually become a creative space in which Mr. Espresso can put theory and experimentation into practice.

The ambivalence towards coffee that Luigi originally held upon joining the company has expanded into a burgeoning interest and passion that has also lead him to investigate healthy eating, responsible and sustainable production, and the food and restaurant industries. His favorite cuppa is Mr. Espresso’s Neapolitan Blend, the first sip without sugar, and the rest with.

Carlo quickly gained a cult-like following with influential figures in the restaurant community—many at the forefront of California cuisine. Chefs like Alice Waters, Paul Bertolli and Bradley Ogden began serving Carlo’s classically-inspired espresso, establishing a place for espresso at the table of American dining. As a result, legions of coffee fans experience the enjoyment that a well-prepared, delicious espresso can bring, and it has become a critical element of American culinary culture.

Today Mr. Espresso continues to thrive as a second generation of Di Ruoccos have joined the company to build on their father’s reputation for quality—a reputation that spans the country. Mr. Espresso’s specialty coffee is gently roasted as it was in Italy, over slow burning, oak wood logs that are hand selected, perfectly seasoned, and sustainably sourced. Skillfully adapting this Old World tradition to modern tastes, the Di Ruocco family continues to roast classically inspired blends to bring you an espresso like no other.
