KOLORETE is a clean cosmetics company built to change the way luxury looks.
KOLORETE is the only lip care brand that caters to the needs of the under-represented AAPI community. However, the KOLORETE formula works well for people of all backgrounds.
We believe high-quality should be available to ALL people, not just a select few: skin tones, gender identities, and sexual orientations. We don’t believe in one, singular ‘luxury look.’ You have inherent value and worth (with or without us). We believe YOU define what luxury looks like on you.
At KOLORETE, we want to bring ‘high-quality’ ingredients back to the luxury beauty market and expand the image of luxury goods to work for everyone.
We also believe that luxury and sustainability are not mutually exclusive. We are deeply committed to sustainability in packaging using only the highest quality compostable, recycled, upcycled, recyclable, and consciously-traded materials.
Their vision is to make luxury lipstick accessible to all people.
Everyone deserves better lip care and high quality treatment no matter who or what you are. They are committed to disrupt the luxury cosmetics market by representing diversity, equity and inclusion, developing well-edited luxury lip essentials made from high quality, healthy, and natural formulations, and becoming your #1 go-to brand for your instant clean-glam look.
Kolorete was founded in February 2021 on the belief that beauty is intrinsic to all human beings and that all people have inherent value and worth. Although they don’t really think you need makeup since you are beautiful just as you are, they feel lipstick is the gateway to feeling as beautiful on the outside as you already are on the inside. Their hope is to give you the confidence to wear your inner beauty out-and-about everyday without having to do too much!
Johanna and Angela start working together at a San Francisco start-up, at the biggest Fair Trade subscription box company. Angela is an entrepreneur who built the merchandising and logistics departments there and Johanna is an influencer who leads the social media department. They spend time together collaborating on product launches and promotions. After two years, their relationship blossomed. They realized they work well together and they are both great executors. Angela loves building and Johanna loves creating.
Outside their 9 to 5 job, they’re friends. They love sharing quotes and affirmations on Instagram. They share the same emotional and spiritual landscape and are on the same page about their moral direction in life. On top of creating beautiful cosmetics with gorgeous branding, they both want to build an ethical company with a fun environment for both customers and employees.
In October 2020, Johanna asks Angela if she has connections within the beauty industry because (1) it’s her dream to start her own lipstick line, (2) Johanna struggled her whole life finding that one perfect natural lipstick that won't make her lips dry and, (3) as an immigrant, Johanna saw a lack of representation in the beauty industry. Little did she know that one of Angela’s life goals is to start her own natural cosmetics brand!
In January 2021, Angela randomly messages Johanna on Instagram “I think it’s TIME to start your company….And I’m going to help you”, “Where do you want to start?”
And that’s how it all started!
From Pinterest moodboards, to branding, to research and custom lipstick formulation, KOLORETE was born. KOLORETE derived from Johanna’s culture, which is the Filipino word for lipstick, giving it the title of "the first Filipino-owned lipstick brand in the U.S".
