For Spring Summer 2023, J&M Davidson’s offering for small leather goods and accessories takes inspiration from the utilitarianism of the 90s and, putting it through the hazy filter of a warm summer evening, re-imagines it for the modern man and woman.
Searching through the near thirty-year archive of the brand, the London-based design duo who head up the collections looked to the elegant and luxurious designs of the past to provide them with a rich backstory with which to start the 2023 collection.
The Voyage Tote is one such example. A classic design updated with a canvas body and padded Tamesis leather handles and facing, the bag is now available in three different sizes, the smallest of which offers an additional removable strap and zip fastening. Using Tussah Selvetica, a sustainably produced canvas fabric that blends cotton and silk, bags become durable yet luxurious with a soft summery feel. This is thematic throughout the collection.
Also available in the Tussah Selvetica is the Losange, another updated early archive piece that offers a new construction, and the Poppy. Sitting on a round base, the Poppy is the latest addition to the Quiver family and maintains the classic quiver shape, which can be tightly fastened shut with a drawstring closure. The similarly shaped Nano Quiver is another new addition, available in light grey, black and a summery dusty pink. It is a scaled-down version of the larger Quiver bag and is perfectly placed to hold a phone and small daily essentials.
The light hedonism of the 90s has influenced the Mini Fiesta. Perfect as a party bag, its tiers of leather fringing and simple shape give it a playful air. Available in three new colours, striking sapphire, multi-coloured charcoal and black, it’s the perfect addition to any outfit. Similarly inspired by heritage pieces, the Cube Bureau and Mini Cube Bureau are refreshed in canvas and toffee Tamesis leather trim. These practical-shaped bags keep their original features of top handles and chunky brass fixtures and see the addition of leather facing on the zip fastening.
Elsewhere the ready-to-wear collection sees the addition of the Strappy Knotted Sandals, a feminine shoe which features the same comfortable foot as the Hiker and Crossover sandal, and a tubular corded strap is knotted over the foot—made with a mixture of soft suede and nappa leather in pastel colours. The Milano knit range has also been expanded, with a new style featuring a ¾ placket and collar. Perfect for the transitional spring weather, these sweaters made from 100& knitted cotton are available in new colours, a tobacco brown and midnight blue.
Throughout the womenswear collection, a selection of hand-drawn prints adds a layer of interest. The Monstera Leaf Print is a graphic print featuring the bold leaves of the popular Monstera or cheese plant, and the Warped Leaf Pleated print is an intricately printed print with elements of nature abstracted through the pleats. Available in a sun-drenched brunt orange and khaki colour, the pattern accentuates the nature-based theme. Throughout the collection, the colour palettes such as pinstripe and pencil stripe hark back to traditional tailoring.
The collection is ideal for the metamorphosis of spring into summer; warm evenings become balmy nights, which is reflected in the use of elegant plant-based fabrics, such as linen and cotton, and light and comfortable items that can be layered or worn on their own. Warm hues, such as washed khaki and burnt orange, inspired by David Hockney’s paintings during his period in LA, take centre stage throughout both the womenswear and the accessories. Each piece is designed with the modern woman in mind and is the perfect mix of practicality, style, and playfulness.
