Jazzercise, Inc., the brand that pioneered aerobic dance fitness and became a global phenomenon, is the ultimate dance party workout on a mission to create stronger, happier and healthier lives through fitness. As the first dance fitness brand to reach the 50-year mark, Jazzercise has proven its lasting impact on the fitness world and continues to transform lives – both in-studio and on-demand –by combining high intensity dance moves with the latest proven, effective fitness methods like HIIT, strength training, kickboxing, and more. Trust us: the leotards are long gone and the classes are way too hot for leg warmers.

In the last 50+ years, Jazzercise has been

- The first to develop industry teaching standards

- The first to develop a program to train and certify instructors

- The first fitness program to franchise its instructors

- The first to choreograph exercise to Top 40 music

- The first to implement a workout flow (warm up, peak heart rate, cool down)

Founding Story

Judi Sheppard Missett founded Jazzercise in 1969 by combining cardio-pumping dance choreography with strength training, in a class geared toward women. Before Missett, the prevailing attitude was that exercise was the domain of men – but she disrupted that idea by utilizing her passion for dance to create a cardio-pumping choreographed class. What started as a single class with 15 women has grown into a global fitness empire with 8,000+ franchises and 32,000 classes per week in 25 countries.

Jazzercise – a female founded and run company – has always been about empowering women, both in wellness and in business. In 1982, Jazzercise became the first fitness program to franchise as a way to expand across the country while providing franchise owners, the majority of whom are women, more power. Today, Jazzercise spans three generations with Missett's daughter Shanna Missett Nelson as President & CEO, and granddaughter Skyla Nelson a Jazzercise FitPro instructor.

Shanna Missett Nelson is President & CEO of Jazzercise, Inc., guiding the group fitness industry leader in global and local markets and managing strategic direction of the brand. Having a front row view into how her mom, Judi Sheppard Missett, created the largest dance fitness company in the world, Nelson began as an instructor but quickly launched her business career as an international brand consultant and franchise owner herself. Shanna guides the corporate management team and steers the direction of the company. In addition to her role at the company, Shanna is a media spokesperson and motivational speaker who holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature from the University of Arizona. Additionally, her contributions to the fitness industry have been acknowledged through numerous awards, public and media recognition.

Judi Sheppard Missett is a fitness and business icon, having grown Jazzercise, Inc. from a class of 15 women in 1969 to today’s largest dance fitness company in the world. Dancing since the age of 3, Judi turned her passion into a successful career as a professional performer and choreographer. At age 25, however, she discovered her purpose — blending the art of dance and the science of exercise to make dance fitness accessible and fun for everyone. Five decades later, Judi and her daughter Shanna Missett Nelson continue to manage and motivate 8,500 Jazzercise franchisees to achieve their dream of independent business ownership, who in turn inspire millions of customers worldwide to live happier, healthier lives through fitness.

In June 2019, Judi released her third book, BUILDING A BUSINESS WITH A BEAT, Leadership Lessons from Jazzercise — an Empire Built on Passion, Purpose, and Heart. Judi has received numerous national awards and recognitions such as: the Harriet Alger Award for Entrepreneurship presented by Working Woman magazine, a U.S. Presidential Commendation for Top Woman Entrepreneur, four fitness Hall of Fame inductions, the Lifetime Achievement Award from the President’s Council on Fitness and Sports, Entrepreneur of the Year Award from the National Foundation for Women Legislators and Empowered Women, the IDEA Lifetime Achievement Award, the Committee of 200’s Entrepreneurial Champion Luminary Award, and the President’s Award from Women Presidents Organization for the №1 Woman-Owned Business.
