Greenbar Distillery, the first Los Angeles distillery since Prohibition, boasts the world’s largest portfolio of 100% USDA-certified organic spirits. Founded in 2004, the craft distillery, owned by husband and wife team Melkon Khosrovian and Litty Mathew, is defined by complex, flavor-forward spirits, mixers, and ready-to-drink beverages that capture the spirit and flavors of Los Angeles, as well as its deep-rooted commitment to sustainable practices that help erase the distillery's carbon footprint while also helping to rebuild rainforests in Central America. Part of the brand’s commitment to sustainability includes:
Planting one tree per bottle/case of canned cocktails sold: They’ve planted trees in rain forests of Central America that provide not only carbon sinks, but also shade for fair trade crops of coffee and cacao so local farmers can better feed their families.) Since 2008, Greenbar Distillery has planted more than 926,915 trees.
Using only certified organic ingredients: Greenbar Distillery’s spirits help maintain clean farmland and groundwater and prevent adding artificial fertilizers, synthetic pesticides or genetically modified organisms to our world. No artificial flavors or ingredients, this makes the process a bit more challenging, but Greenbar Distillery is willing to go through extra steps to ensure their products are doing more good than harm where the environment is concerned.
Reducing packaging waste and pollution through lightweight bottles and 100% post-consumer waste recycled labels, and by avoiding frosting, plastics and metallic paints.
Having met at the University of Southern California, Husband and wife duo and co-founders of Greenbar Distillery, Melkon Khosrovian and Litty Mathew, found their passion for spirit making after a round of celebrations toasting their engagement. Born in Armenia, Melkon grew up attending lively family parties with bottles of high-proof brandies being passed around that his grandparents made with excess fruits like mulberries and apricots picked from their orchard. Family members would make poetic toasts and all the guests would down a shot of their family-made spirits; everyone except Litty. With the refined palate she had acquired from her prestigious training at Le Cordon Bleu, Litty had a hard time imbibing in spirits she thought tasted like “nail polish remover.” So, her eager to please and determined partner set out to create a spirit that would please her palate.
In perusing the Hollywood Farmers’ Market, picking and tasting plants on strolls through Griffith Park, eating fresh mint at the Armenian sandwich shop, drinking lapsang souchong tea at a popular Sichuan restaurant, and picking up on the notes of Indian spices in Mexican tortas, Melkon and Litty began drawing inspiration from the tastes, smells and culture that make LA, LA.
For the first couple of years, the duo did everything themselves. Monday and Tuesday, they’d start batches. Wednesday and Thursday, they’d drive around selling. Friday, they would bottle, and Saturday and Sunday, their friends and family would help prep for the next week.
What started as a love story turned into a story about a love of spirit making. Their aim to bottle the spirit of spirits came to fruition after years of laboring over a flavor-led line of liquors. Today, Greenbar Distillery carries 6 distinct liquor categories with variations of each, a line of bitters and liqueurs, and a rapidly expanding collection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic canned cocktails, all inspired by cultural flavors and crafted with 100% organic ingredients, love and spirit in Los Angeles’ Arts District.
