Launched in 2013, Canva is a free online visual communications and collaboration platform with a mission to empower everyone in the world to design. Featuring a simple drag-and-drop user interface and a vast range of templates ranging from presentations, social media graphics, posters, apparel to videos, plus a huge library of fonts, stock photography, illustrations, video footage, and audio clips, anyone can take an idea and create something beautiful. Canva is available on desktop, web, iOS, and Android.
Melanie Perkins and Cliff Obrecht, both from Sydney, Australia, became fascinated with photo editing software in their University years. They were blown away by the tools that were available and how someone like them, without formal training, was able to do countless edits and design at their fingertips. After creating Fusion Books (an online yearbook-design company) they came to Silicon Valley in search of funding to create their own one-stop-shop for all things marketing and photo editing, Canva.
Over a decade after its founding, Canva is one of the most influential design platforms on the planet with over 75 million monthly active users which breaks down to over 150 designs made per second. Their idea to bring photo editing and design to all people in one place is why so many businesses use it for social media posts, flyers, newsletters, etc. No longer is photo editing available only to those who have the funds to purchase incredibly expensive software and the need to go through hours of training.
Canva has flipped the script of who can call themselves a "designer" and given millions of businesses owners, entrepreneurs, and social media influencers the power to create and manage their own masterpieces.
