Founding Story

Founded in 2018 by Tiila Abbitt, a passionate, highly creative product development professional with 11+ years of experience- including in the international prestige beauty industry. Tiila has a BFA in sculpture and an MFA in fashion design. She worked in the fashion industry for over 5 years before transitioning to beauty. She is highly passionate about the sustainable beauty product realm. Tiila spent 7 years at Sephora in charge of product development for makeup collaborations and accessories. Her obsession with sustainability leads her to become the lead R+D for sustainable materials while also being on the sustainability leadership council for the retailer. Being a global brand, Tiila quickly learned that in the USA, there are only 11 banned chemicals in color cosmetics while in the European Union, there are over 1300. Because of this, she learned how to formulate color cosmetics with a very large chemical ban list and how to substitute for cleaner alternatives. Tiila has had a long tenure passion for the organic product realm and has been a vegetarian for over 24 years, and also incorporates a plant-based diet. Always bringing natural, organic alternatives into her every day (including learning how to cook organic food at an organic restaurant while in college) she started to look at natural makeup formulations and just found that none of the offerings could truly compete with the efficacy of conventional beauty. The space lacked a choice of color and trend, as well as truly sustainable packaging.

Plastic makeup componentry is a huge source of pollution globally and Tiila really wanted to create a brand that was ethically sustainable, beyond the formulation, but in everything that Āthr Beauty creates.

Tiila is aware of the eco-footprint we have in everything we do and as a founder, wants to bring sustainability into every decision at Āthr Beauty.

That's why she won't launch a product until there's a better sustainable alternative. And when you purchase Āthr Beauty products a portion of sales goes to environmental charities, because giving back and being sustainable is the only way to ensure we leave this planet better than we found it.

Tiila Abbitt founded ATHR Beauty after spending 15+ years as a product development professional- including 7 years at Sephora, where she developed top-performing products that earned Sephora 20+ awards. Tiila developed an expertise in formulating cosmetics that met the EU’s strict standards but also offered the efficacy of US conventional brands. She realized that none of the clean formulas could truly compete with the efficacy of conventional beauty. She was surprised to learn about the lack of sustainability & found that the clean beauty space also lacked a choice of colors, trends, and most importantly, innovation. Tiila set out to prove that she could not only develop high-performing clean formulas, but she could do so while prioritizing ethics and sustainability.

Brydie - Jan 28, 2021 The 53 Best Clean Beauty Products of 2020 "Our editors and guest judges (more on them later) tested hundreds of products throughout the year and nominated over 300 that qualified as “clean” by Byrdie’s Clean Beauty Pledge. From there, we narrowed down the winners based on three things: ingredients (are they high-quality and non-toxic?), sustainability (does its creation take into account environmental impact or are their charitable elements?), and efficacy (does it work?). We placed a heavy emphasis on ingredients and sustainability this year, choosing to highlight brands that are really going above and beyond to formulate with sustainably-sourced, clean ingredients while minimizing their carbon footprint—and lucky for us and our planet, there are so, so many."

Mind Body Green The Mica Issue Isn't Solved — The Latest On The Sparkly Stuff In Your Makeup "When you think of "cruelty-free" makeup, animal testing typically appears front of mind, but cruelty-free beauty means so much more—it entails everything from testing the formulas to mining the minerals that give us the glow we love. We've known for a while that the beauty supply chain can sometimes be, shall we say, shady. The industry was quick to react when mica sourcing became a trending topic, with op-eds and exposés alike shedding much-needed light on the problem. But despite some slow progress, the mica issue still isn't solved—a few industry insiders are now trying harder than ever to do something about it."

Testimonials

What I love about the ATHR Amethyst Palette: 12 beautiful and adventurous shades Mostly shimmer with a few matte shades Buildable shades that can go from subtle to dramatic Sufficiently pigmented Goes on smooth and consistently This is a great palette if you are looking for a wide mix of shades that includes a number of purples. While priced at $58, if you’re going to get a lot of use out of all 12 shades, this is actually great value for money. The 4 smaller shades in the center of the palette are more shimmer than pigment and add an ethereal prism-like look to your eyeshadow look. These are pretty velvelty, with hardly any kickback and last a good part of the day.
