Afia, which means “to your health” in Arabic, is a Mediterranean food company headquartered in Austin, Texas, driven by a mission to make food powerful. Co-Founded by Farrah Moussallati Sibai, who had resettled in Texas after enduring great personal tragedy and loss in Syria, Afia’s products infuse the meals of her past with modern flavors. Using her mother-in-law's little black book of old Syrian family recipes, Moussallati Sibai began selling Afia’s signature frozen falafel and kibbeh at one farmers’ market in 2017.
Afia now offers seven different SKUs at more than 2700 retail locations nationwide and online. Afia proudly became one of H-E-B’s Supplier Diversity Supplier of the Year award recipients and a Chobani’s Incubator brand, both in 2019. The brand was also recognized by the Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce with the Greater Austin Business Award for Best Consumer Product in 2021 and Progressive Grocer’s Impact Award in 2021.
Afia is dedicated to nourishing the community through more than food through regular donations to local food banks and by supporting their local community of refugees through employment and mentoring.
Afia's story isn’t a fairytale, and that’s what makes it so enchanting. Afia began as a little black book filled with traditional Mediterranean recipes that made its way across continents and through trials, transitions and transformations. Our journey from a kitchen in Syria, to a farmers' market in Austin, and now to stores across the nation, has been about infusing the meals of our past with modern flavors, and nourishing our community every step of the way.
“Afia!” is a toast “to one’s health and well-being” and a reminder to brighten up your table, and uplift those around it. At Afia we make food that’s nourishing, tastes great, and gives back — all at once. Because we are on a mission to make food powerful.
Farrah Moussallati Sibai
CoFounder and President
As President and Co-founder of Afia, Farrah Moussallati Sibai is dedicated to making authentic Mediterranean cuisine more accessible to Americans and empowering women and children to pursue their best selves.
Born and raised in England and of Syrian descent, Sibai dreamed of having a big family and becoming a lawyer, but life would show her a different path. From personal tragedies and loss at home in Syria came resilience, strength, and determination. Finding roots with her family in her new hometown of Austin, TX, Farrah wasn’t able to find the Mediterranean foods her family knew and loved at the local grocery stores. Together, with her husband Yassin Sibai, she launched Afia in 2017 to answer this need.
Afia, which started at only one Austin farmer’s market, found its first distribution at H-E-B in 2019 and proudly became H-E-B’s Diversity Supplier of the Year. The company was also awarded one of the Chobani Incubator brands that same year. Afia now sells seven different products of frozen falafel and kibbeh at 2700 retail locations nationwide. Afia offers a modern take on Mediterranean classics in flavors like Za'atar and Turmeric using quality ingredients. They have a wide line of vegan and gluten-free products.
Afia and Farrah have a mission to serve the community and the belief that all women and children have the right to feel empowered and safe to reach their dreams. The company works with hunger relief organizations in its community and regularly employs, advocates and supports members of the Austin refugee community.
