Sustainable Baby Clothes: 9 Brands For The Best Organic Snuggles

Joy Mcconnochie

Oh baby!

Let’s talk onesies, bodysuits, and adorable sustainable baby clothes that won’t break the B Corp bank or our blue planet.

Why?

Because the textile industry is dirtier than that eco-friendly diaper.

Those 8,000-chemicals, toxic dyes, and flame retardants, might keep you up at night—even if your baby is sleeping soundly.

Fortunately, these are all too easy to keep out of your home by dressing your mini-you in the best organic baby clothes.

How We Found The Best Sustainable Baby Clothes

From eco-friendly toys to teeny tiny t-shirts, we can apply our sustainable fashion criteria to determine who makes the best eco-friendly baby clothes.

Materials:

What material makes for the best affordable organic baby clothes?

Organic cotton, of course!

Grown without herbicides, pesticides, and other harmful toxins found in conventional cotton, it gives us parents peace of mind.

Other sustainable options include non toxic bamboo viscose, recycled synthetics, TENCEL, and modal, paired with nickel and lead-free hardware and non-toxic dyes.

All natural fabrics also mean garments are compostable if oopsies occur—helping in your zero waste baby efforts.

Supply chain and labor practices:

Coddling and cooing over a baby is much better with a clear conscience.

While we weren’t able to find any of the best organic baby clothes made in the USA, we did find brands with some A-OK transparency and worker protections in place, like codes of conduct, annual internal audits, and third-party certifications.

Green business practices:

The best organic baby brands not only design a sustainable product, but design it to last—especially when babies grow in and out of things so quickly.

Things a brand can do to curb the 12 million baby garments hitting US landfills annually include designing clothes with room-to-grow features, using quality craftsmanship so they can be passed down, and implementing their own circularity programs.

Inclusivity:

While we’re not so much worried about size inclusivity on this one, gender inclusivity is starting to make its way into the world of baby clothes.

We’re happy to see gender neutral options, as well as diverse teams, baby models and affordable sustainable baby clothes that are accessible to all.

Community & charitable giving:

Your baby can grow up in a world that’s more respectful, fair, and just—thanks in some part to these companies and their commitment to social and environmental justice.

Final Thoughts On Ethical & Eco-Friendly Baby Clothes Brands

Look who’s talking.

No not the movie, but these organic baby clothes brands.

By supporting one of these brands, you’re choosing an eco-conscious alternative which will keep your baby cozy and comfortable.

Buying ethical sustainable baby clothes also happens to show your little one that you’re casting a vote in favor of a happy and habitable home for when they grow up.

To keep the ethical baby ball rolling (er, crawling), feel free to share with any expecting parents who may need a little guidance.

  1. Sorry, these are not affordable brands. Affordable would be supermarket prices, i.e. £5 – £10 for a sleepsuit, not £30 as is the case for some of these. I can buy adult clothing for that price.

Another indication that being sustainable is not always cost effective for people who earn less.

    Reply
    • Hi Kim, I agree, “affordable” is relative in this case unfortunately and it’s so frustrating that it’s taking so long for pricing to come down for more sustainable products. Hopefully as more people (who can afford it) prioritise sustainability and ethics, we’ll see that shift in better pricing for the rest of us.
