A startup that offers personalized nutritional treatments to professional athletes and regular consumers alike has raised $10 million in fresh funds.

Tennessee-based Rootine, which was founded in 2017, is used by the likes of NFL player Brian Burns, ice hockey player Brianna Decker, and MMA fighter Matt Brown.

The company aims to offer personalized support to patients through precision nutrition, a form of treatment that takes into account factors such as a person's medical history, DNA, race, gender, and lifestyle to optimize their overall diet and health.

"Maintaining an optimum flow of nutrition is key, and critical for everything from sleep to metabolic health," said cofounder and CEO Rachel Sanders. "But getting to this place is really hard in the modern world."

The startup makes most of its money through its precision multivitamin membership and at-home lab tests, according to Sanders. It also offers a precision multivitamin subscription which starts at $69 a month, for three months.

Rootine provides a mix of at-home and digital services, which Sanders billed as "more affordable than a clinic." Its at-home lab tests include a cheek swab DNA test, as well as vitamin and mineral blood tests that use finger pricks, which are used to analyze around 100 data points.

This data, combined with data from Rootine's own clinical datasets and AI algorithm, is used to create a formula that's tailored to a patient's own needs. They are accordingly assigned the relevant nutrient pills, or 'microbeads' — a form of nutrient delivery that slowly releases nutrients over a six-hour period in the body. This health data can also be accessed digitally through Rootine's own dashboard online.

The Series A round was led by Tennessee-based Relevance Ventures, a Native American-owned VC firm that backs health, wellness, and consumer startups, which has previously invested in mental health startup Talkiatry and telehealth startup Qler Solutions. Additional participation came from Techstars and DSM Venturing, bringing its total funding raised to $14.5 million.

With the fresh funds, Rootine will focus on expanding its distribution channels in a bid to hit more key milestones, as well as growing its community precision health club.
