What Are the Best Throws to Buy?

Like we said, not all throws are made the same, even the high-quality ones, i.e. every blanket on this list. Personal preference plays a major role in finding the perfect throw, so pay plenty of attention to size, material, and care instructions.

Size

Typically throw blankets have a standard size of 50 x 60 inches, though this isn't a hard-and-fast rule. Many throws nowadays come in oversized dimensions, particularly luxury and more expensive brands, while cheaper throws go more undersized. Whether oversized, standard, or undersized, throws overall are smaller than blankets used as bedding layers. A throw's petite dimensions make it easier to fold or drape over the back of a couch or at the foot of a bed for a functional, decorative accent.

Material

There are plenty of different fabrics and blends a blanket could be made from, so it would be impossible to go over all of them, but we'll hit a few of the most popular.

  • Cotton—Cotton is versatile, easy to find, and easy to work with, so it's no surprise that it's a popular fabric of choice when it comes to throws. While cotton is oftentimes used alone to make material, you'll also find cotton blended with other fabrics to create unique combinations and bring out the beauty and features of each fiber.
  • Polyester—This synthetic resin material is extremely popular when it comes to fabric composition. It's versatile and durable, but high quality isn't always guaranteed. It's a cheap option, but it can be woven beautifully to create an incredibly soft fabric.
  • Fleece—Fleece gets a bad wrap for being cheap and thin, but, when woven well, this material can shine, featuring softness and durability that's unmatched.
  • Wool—Made from the natural hair fibers of animals like sheep, alpaca, and rabbits, wool is a heavy and long-lasting fiber. While many wool blankets are scratchy, high-quality wool grows softer with every wash, making them beautiful heirlooms when well cared for.
  • Cashmere—Similar to wool, this material is made from the hair fibers of cashmere or pashmina goats, but boasts a naturally softer and thinner thread. It's often more delicate, giving it a luxurious feel but more intense upkeep.

How to Care for Your Throw

Care instructions differ based on the type of material your throw is made from. For instance, wool and cashmere are most likely dry clean only, while cotton and polyester are typically machine washable. However, it's best practice with machine washable blankets to wash in cold water on a delicate or gentle cycle. Keep the use of detergent to a minimum and skip the fabric softener as both of these can get caught in the fabric fibers and actually deteriorate the fibers or make them scratchy. Unless otherwise noted, tumble dry on low heat or just lay your blanket flat to dry.

    Pros
    • Well-priced for thick, quality sherpa
    • Machine washable
    • Slightly oversized
    • Tons of color options
    Cons

Oftentimes the fluffiness of sherpa fools people into thinking that a blanket is thicker than it actually is, but this isn't the case with this throw. Both sides are sherpa material, making this blanket just as hefty and cozy as it appears on first glance. In the words of one reviewer, "Seriously the best throw blanket I have ever used. Snuggly, soft, cozy, and warm without being overbearing."

While many lower-quality sherpa materials have a tendency to pill and mat overtime with washing, this isn't the case with UGG's. The blanket holds its heft, keeping the fluffy texture. Colors stay true as well.

      Dimensions: 50 x 70 in.

      Material: 100% polyester sherpa

      Care: Machine wash.

      Pros
      • Hefty yet breathable cotton blend
      • Machine washable
      • 4 colors available
      • Personalized monogram available
      Cons
      • Slightly undersized

When you think of a classic, hefty throw that feels like a cozy hug without suffocating you in heat and fabric, this is the blanket you're thinking of. It's a blend of cotton, wool, and nylon to create the perfect mix of stretch, breathability, and coziness. It features a classic design that can be left plain or personalized with a monogram and has easy care instructions. If you're looking for a great, year-round, fits-with-any-décor blanket, this is it. The only downside is that this throw is slightly undersized in comparison to a traditional one. While this is far from a deal breaker, it's definitely something to consider.

      Dimensions: 64 x 42 in.

      Material: 60% cotton, 30% nylon, 10% wool

Care: Machine wash cold, leave flat to dry.

      • Machine washable
      • Quality on the cheap
      Cons

Fleece isn't known for being the heftiest and most durable of materials, but reviewers continuously say how this blanket breaks the mold. Surprisingly thick, one reviewer said, "even in cold winter nights when my room got below 60 degrees Fahrenheit, this blanket still kept me warm." At $15, some might be willing to sacrifice durability for coziness and settle on repurchasing every year or so, but this blanket has been known to last years through heavy use and washes without pilling or tearing. While fleece isn't the most luxurious material, for the price, this blanket blows the competition out of the water.

        • Reasonably priced luxury
        • Slightly oversized

        • Handmade

        Cons
        • Dry clean only

Wool is a luxury fabric, so be prepared to spend a bit more on it. This Silk & Snow throw is reasonably priced considering the indulgent fabric, which is handwoven by artisans from 100% baby Peruvian alpaca wool ("baby" refers to the softness of the material, not the animal's age). Cozy beyond belief, the blanket comes in a bit longer than many throw blankets and features a signature fringe for a slightly more elevated look. It is also surprisingly lightweight, so while you can expect it to keep you warm, you won't overheat. Oh, and did we mention that you get all this for $140? Bargain.

        Dimensions: 51 x 71 in. and 1.2 lbs.

        • Personalized monogram available
        Cons
        • Dry clean only

Cashmere for under $200? Say it ain't so! This throw blanket is made from 100% recycled cashmere, so while the quality is still exactly what you'd expect from high-end cashmere, the price is far better. Made in Italy, the blanket also sports a fringed bottom for a slightly more upscale look. As with most luxury fabrics, cashmere must be dry cleaned, so expect a little more upkeep with this blanket. But take care of it, and it will deliver years of unmatched coziness.

        • Pre-washed and shrunk
        Cons

Thought muslin blankets would just for babies? Think again. Cotton muslin is lightweight and breathable while still giving a bit of warmth and comfort, which is why it's a top material for baby blankets. But who says the little ones get in on all the coziness? Muslin Comfort's throw is a bit heftier than many other muslin blankets, made from eight layers of cotton to give it the perfect mix of weight and breathability. While muslin cotton is preferred for those who sleep hot, anyone would enjoy this cozy blanket year-round.

          Dimensions: 50 x 70 in.

          Material: 100% cotton

Care: Machine wash on normal, tumble dry on normal or high heat.
