While bidet seats may be partially a lifestyle choice, they can also be a practical bathroom accessory for ensuring a thorough cleaning every time you go. Plus, they can help you save money on toilet paper.

If you've been on the fence about splurging on this widely misunderstood toilet companion, consider the features that bidets are loaded with to make your trip to the loo a pleasant one every time. "They encompass a host of upgrades, including modern design, heated seats, heated water, warm air, lighting, and more," says Richard Epstein, a licensed master plumber and member of The Spruce Home Improvement Review Board.

Unlike a traditional bidet that requires full plumbing hookups, a bidet seat is much easier to install on top of your existing toilet. To better understand the market, we researched standout bidet seat designs that offer a variety of features. We've even been able to recently test nine bidet toilet seats in our own homes to learn all of the essential and "nice to have" features of this bathroom appliance. Whether you're looking for a traditional bidet setup or a gadget that does it all, these are the best bidet seats to upgrade your bathroom.

Testing in Progress

We just finished testing nine bidet toilet seats at home and will update this list soon with new picks. You can expect more detailed insights on the Toto C100 Electronic Bidet Toilet Seat and the Vovo Stylement Electronic Bidet Seat, which are currently on our list.

Our Top Picks

Best Overall

Bio Bidet Slim One Electric Bidet Seat

Bio Bidet Slim One Electric Bidet Seat for Elongated Toilets with Fusion Heating Technology

Home Depot

What We Like
  • Built-in air dryer

  • Heated seat

  • Nightlight

What We Don't Like
  • No wireless remote

  • Short power cord

Our best overall pick is the Bio Bidet Slim One. This comprehensive bidet seat has a stainless steel oscillating nozzle offering three different cleaning angles, along with wide, turbo, and massage functions. It boasts adjustable water pressure and multiple temperature settings, plus a warm air dryer to ensure you're not alarmed by a blast of cold.

Other notable features include a soft-close lid, heated seat, and nightlight for middle-of-the-night bathroom trips. There's also a body sensor that detects when someone sits down. This ensures that the nightlight and heated seat features don't activate unnecessarily. We also love the energy-saving function that can keep the seat and water temperature settings low or off until someone sits down.

While the Slim One has an easy-to-use button control panel, there's no wireless remote, which would be more convenient for younger and older individuals. This particular seat runs on electricity, so you'll need to plug it into the wall—but we should note that the power cord is only 4 feet long. We've linked to the elongated seat above, but it is also available in a round shape.

Do bidets use a lot of electricity?

"They [bidets] hold very small amounts of water to allow it to be heated, and the [drying] or lighting options use minimal electricity," says Epstein. In addition to plug-in models, you'll find battery-powered options that run on alkaline batteries. There are also manual bidets that use no battery power or electricity.

Best Budget

While this model doesn't have temperature controls or other fancy features, we appreciate the soft-close design of the lid. You can even purchase this bidet seat in a biscuit or bone white color if you don't have a traditional ivory toilet.

Simply select your user icon (1 or 2) on the remote when you sit on the seat.

Other standout features include seven cleaning angles, an adjustable warm air dryer, a built-in nightlight, self-sterilizing nozzles, a replaceable carbon deodorizer, and a hidden pocket for the power cord. Just a heads-up: The cord is only 3.5 feet, shorter than many other options on this list.

Toto C100 Washlet Electronic Bidet Seat

Toto C100 Washlet Electronic Bidet Toilet Seat

Amazon

What We Like
  • Three air speeds

  • Pre-mist spray before each use

  • Water heating reservoir

What We Don't Like
  • No wireless remote

The Toto C100 Washlet has three air speeds that blow at the perfect angle, so you'll experience a comfortable clean after every use. You want your bidet seat's dryer to be strong enough to work effectively but not so strong that it ends up splashing the toilet water, and we think the C100 Washlet balances that perfectly. In addition to multiple air speeds and a heated option, the C100 has a pre-mist that sprays the bowl to create a slick surface before you go.

The seat itself also heats up for maximum comfort when you sit down. We also love that this model has a warm water reservoir, so you don't have to wait for the stream to heat up. While the C100 doesn't have a wireless remote, the easy-to-reach control panel is located just to the side of the seat.

Shape: Round | Dimensions: 20.5 x 15 x 6 inches | Material: Plastic | Control Type: Control panel

The Vovo Stylement Bidet has a three-hole stainless steel nozzle that self-cleans before and after each use. This model also uses UV sterilization to clean the bowl. You can adjust the nozzle angle, water pressure, and water temperature exactly to your liking. As a bonus, the wealth of smart features packed into this single seat make using—and cleaning—a total breeze.

We also love that this bidet seat has a remote, so all users can easily control its functions. There are, unfortunately, no customizable user settings, so you will have to readjust all of the settings before each use.

What We Like
  • Soft-close lid

  • Quick release seat for easy cleaning

  • Self-cleaning wand

What We Don't Like
  • No warm water function

The Kohler Puretide Non-Electric Bidet Seat doesn't need to be plugged into a wall or require any batteries, yet it's still packed with essential bidet features. It has a self-rinsing wand that sprays room-temperature water, and you can control the angle and pressure using the side lever.

Due to its electricity-free design, the Puretide skips out on features like a warm water function or heated seat. However, it has a soft-close lid and a curved design that'll complement most bathrooms. It's also super-easy to install and remove when deep cleaning your bathroom.

Shape: Elongated or round | Dimensions: 18.5 x 17.5 x 4.5 inches | Material: Plastic | Control Type: Lever

What We Don't Like
  • No remote control

The SmartBidet Electric Heated Seat has a self-cleaning nozzle with five positions, three pressure levels, and three temperature settings, plus an oscillating wash function. We especially love that this seat has a feminine wash setting rather than just a front and back wash.

The heated seat has three levels of warmth, complete with a safety sensor that activates its warmth only when someone sits down. It can be powered by one AA battery (not included) or plugged into a wall, but just keep in mind that the power cord is under 4 feet long.

Shape: Elongated or round | Dimensions: 21 x 15.5 x 6 inches | Material: Plastic | Control Type: Control panel

Best with Night Light

Alpha JX Bidet Toilet Seat

Alpha JX Elongated Bidet Toilet Seat

Amazon

What We Like
  • Easy-wash function

  • Ambient light-sensing LED light

  • Water-saving design

What We Don't Like
  • No memory settings

We appreciate that the Alpha Bidet JX Bidet Toilet Seat has an LED night light that activates when the lights in your bathroom are turned off, so you don't have to turn on your bathroom lights in the middle of the night. The remote control allows you to easily adjust the angle, temperature, and pressure. But there's also an "easy wash" button for efficient cleaning.

The tankless heating system promises to use 40 percent less water than standard bidets, and the brand promises a quiet operation with fewer gurgling and tank noises. Despite being packed with helpful features, this bidet seat does not have memory settings, so you will have to adjust all the functions with each use.

Shape: Elongated or round | Dimensions: 21 x 15 x 5.5 inches | Material: Plastic | Control Type: Touch panel, remote

Final Verdict

Our best overall pick, the Bio Bidet Slim One Electric Bidet Seat is our favorite bidet seat because it boasts adjustable wash settings, a heated design, a built-in night light, and an air dryer. The Mayfair Kendall Bidet Bundle, our best budget pick, is also a solid choice if you don't need a feature-loaded bidet seat. And if you want something fancier with plenty of features, we highly recommend the Brondell Swash 1400 Luxury Bidet Seat, our best splurge pick.

What to Look for in a Bidet Seat

Shape and Type

Like standard toilet seats, bidet seats are sold in round or elongated shapes. Each has a slightly different appearance, but you'll want to pick the shape that fits your toilet bowl.

Elongated designs are more common in the United States, but all of our picks are available in both shapes, except for our best with dryer pick, the Toto C100 Washlet. You can also find bidet seats in several colors, but we recommend matching the finish to your toilet for a seamless look.

Bidet seats are sold as manual or electrical models. Manual bidet seats only require a water hookup, while electrical ones need a nearby wall outlet. Electrical bidet seats require a nearby ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) outlet, which are electrical outlets designed to cut off when exposed to water. Some electrical bidet seats also only require batteries rather than a wall outlet. Our best heated pick, the SmartBidet SB-2000 Bidet Seat, can be plugged into a wall or operate on one AA battery, giving you flexibility during installation.

Ease of Use

Regardless of how many features it has, a bidet seat should be user-friendly. Many can be controlled with the touch of a button or the turn of a dial through an attached control panel or a wireless remote. While a remote control is a nice upgrade, an organized, easy-to-reach control panel is generally sufficient for everyday use and may ultimately be easier for guests to operate.

Installation Requirements

When buying a bidet seat, don't overlook the installation requirements and necessary parts, which may or may not be included in the product package. "The roughing, including making the plumbing and electricity to the correct specifications, can be equally expensive," says Richard Epstein, licensed master plumber and member of The Spruce Home Improvement Review Board.

Typically, bidet seats replace your existing toilet seat. After you remove the existing seat, you’ll install a T-valve to the toilet’s water hose so it delivers water to both the tank and the seat. Then you’ll attach the cord and plug it in. Most seats come with a 4-foot power cord; we don't recommend using an extension cord, as the bathroom is a naturally damp area.

If you're not up for it, consider hiring a professional to install your bidet seat. Alternatively, bidet attachment kits are sometimes easier to set up.

Standout Features

Nozzle Positions

"Traditional bidets have a faucet with a spray nozzle that can be adjusted," says Epstein. This is a crucial feature of bidet seats, as it allows you to get the proper angle for thorough cleaning after using the bathroom. While many basic bidet designs have three angles, you can find models with even more. For example, our best heated choice, the SmartBidet Electric Bidet Seat, boasts five nozzle positions.

Memory Settings

In addition to nozzle positions, most bidet seats also have adjustable water pressure to ensure a more comfortable cleaning for all ages, genders, and body types. Even non-electric models like the Mayfair Kendall Bidet Toilet Seat (our best budget option) allow you to manually control the strength of the spray by twisting a dial. But typically, you have to adjust these settings each time you use the restroom on more basic bidets. Expensive models will allow you to customize memory settings so the pressure is always the same every time you use the restroom.

Water Temperature

Basic bidet seats like the Kohler Puretide (our best manual pick) spray room-temperature water. However, more advanced models, like the Bio Bidet Slim One (our best overall pick), have adjustable temperature settings, allowing you to choose warm water if that's more comfortable.
