Friday Five: 5 Healthy Snack Finds for Summer Travels

Everyone is getting ready for summer travels. Whether you’re driving or flying, you always need healthy snacks. I’ve tried a bunch of great new products this spring since Expo West and gearing up for Sweets and Snacks. I try to grab something high in protein. I also have a bunch of easy to pack fruit and veggie products when I’m eating out a lot in places where there are less fresh options available. I like to have nuts and healthy trail mixes with me, of course. In addition to those, here are five new snacks you’ll find in my travel bag this summer.

5 New Healthy Snack Finds for Summer Travels

Pescavore Tuna Jerky – Pescavore is a 1.5 oz single serving of wild tuna hand crafted jerky sourced from sustainable seafood. They use premium marinades and whole cuts, then apply the age-old tradition of natural wood smoking. The small batch process maintains flavor, texture, protein, and nutrients with less residual salt and sugar than traditional jerky. It’s packed in a convenient, single serving and is shelf stable. Each serving contains 14 grams of protein, 189mg of OMEGA-3 and only 1g of added sugar. Get Pescavore online and in these West Coast stores.

Forca Foods Energy Bites – Forca Foods makes energy bites with watermelon seeds as a base. This sustainable seed helps to conserve water while delivering a fulfilling and healthy snacking experience. They use 100% organic ingredients and these tasty bites are gluten free, dairy free, preservative free and vegan. They come in Strawberry, Banana and Coffee flavors. Coffee was a big hit with our Blue Ridge Half Marathon group. Get Forca Foods Energy Bites (and two nut free trail mixes) online.

Country Archer Plant-Based Jerky – I’ve been a fan of Country Archer’s meat jerky for years (and include it in my travel snacks). They have a new mushroom based plant-jerky that’s also delicious and easy to bring along. The Plant-Based Jerky is crafted with slices of King Oyster mushrooms. It has 3g of dietary fiber per serving and is free of soy, gluten, artificial preservatives and MSG. They say (and I agree that it) “travels well on your camping adventures, road trips, game days, long walks and stashed in your office desk drawer.” Get Country Archer Plant-Based Jerky online, on Amazon and at many stores.

Kate’s Real Food Bars – Kate’s is a woman-founded energy bar and snack bites company committed to fueling adventures and travels with organic, great tasting products. The bars come in eight unique, great tasting flavors. The bars are USDA-certified organic, certified gluten-free, certified non-GMO and soy-free. They contain healthy fats and protein (such as dark chocolate and almonds) to help fuel your day. The bars are portable and light, but are very satisfying. I tried a few flavors in 2013, but I’m excited to try some new ones and to share some soon. Get Kate’s Real Food Bars online, on Amazon and at many stores.

SOW Good Veggies – SOW Good makes yummy freeze dried fruit, smoothies and granola. They added some amazing freeze dried veggies into the mix. They have freeze dried cherry tomatoes, beet and sweet potato chips. The veggies and fruit are freeze dried, so they’re light but are packed with nutrients and are easy to travel with. All snacks are naturally gluten free and vegan. Get SOW Good online and at these stores and stay tuned for a review and giveaway in June.
