Most of us know that the secret to the perfect cup of homemade coffee involves grinding your beans fresh, just before you put on a pot. But not all coffee grinders are created equal: When you're choosing between burrs and blades, there's an obvious winner.
"Burr grinders are undeniably superior," says Jenna Gotthelf, the national wholesale education manager at Counter Culture Coffee. "The biggest advantage you will get from a burr grinder is even grind particle size. Essentially, this means that all of the pieces of coffee you smashed in your grinder are the same size; this is a key to proper coffee brewing."
Just like cutting an onion into an even dice allows the pieces to cook evenly, using a burr grinder ensures your coffee particles are the same size and will extract at the same rate. "With a blade grinder, your coffee is at the mercy of when the beans hit the blade," she says. "It is very hard to achieve consistent results this way."
Whether you're an espresso snob looking for a coffee-shop-quality grinder or a beginner stepping into the world of beans, grinds, and brews, there's a burr grinder can fits your taste (and budget) in the suggestions below.
