If you're active on social media, you've probably been served an ad or two about TUSHY, considering the company is quickly becoming ‌the‌ bidet for any household.

And Dr. Connor says it's for a good reason: TUSHY is not only relatively affordable, but it's also easy to install, even if you're not exactly handy.

"It comes with a targeted sprayer and all the necessary pieces to install it yourself," she continues. "It also allows you to adjust the water temperature from warm to cool, which is great for avoiding any scalding and adjusting to your preferences."

One potential setback to note: TUSHY has a nine-foot maximum on the distance between your sink and toilet to connect the hot water to this bidet attachment. So keep that in mind as you figure out if it's a fit for your unique bathroom design.

Built-in bidets can cost thousands of dollars, which may not fit into your budget. If you want to give one a shot without forking over too much cash, Dr. Connor recommends a handheld bidet, which will help you get comfortable using this type of cleaning method.

When you think of adding a bidet to your restroom, is one of the biggest selling points a dry bottom after you do your business? If so, you need a bidet that not only offers the washing but the drying component, too.

While this will set you back a bit more, Dr. Connor says it's worth the investment because it's an entire toilet seat and bidet, a style that's much easier to keep clean. But keep in mind: A bidet on-the-go isn't exactly luxury. It requires a little legwork, and you may feel like Macgyver. How does it work? The two included attachments are different sizes and should fit on the most common plastic bottle openings. Then, you fill with water (cool, warm or hot) and clean after doing your business.

As we age, our flexibility and mobility decrease, making it tricky for some older adults to clean themselves after going to the restroom. A bidet can significantly improve their overall health and hygiene, not to mention giving them the independence they crave.

Dr. Connor says this option is mid-range in cost but offers many of the luxury models' functions. Think: a heated seat, an eco-mode and dual nozzles for frontal feminine sprays and rear washes.

Most of the high-end bidets will offer dual nozzles: one for feminine cleaning in the front and one for perennial cleaning in the back. But if your budget doesn't allow for a fancy bidet, you can still reap the benefits of a dual-nozzle on a budget.

Dr. Connor says this one from SAMODRA is easy to install and affordable. "It's not electric, has adjustable pressure control and the nozzle retracts to keep it out of the way when not in use so that it remains more sanitary," she says.

According to Dr. Connor, the first thing most people cite as a reason they prefer using bidets to wiping with toilet paper is that they feel cleaner after using the restroom. It's sort of like taking a mini shower, which definitely feels like a deeper clean than simply wiping.

But one thing to keep in mind is that water from the bidet should never be too hot. "You could scald your anus and cause injury," Dr. Connor warns.

On a less extreme level, though, frequent use of bidets with too-warm water could also increase your chances of drying out your skin and getting an itchy anus and perineum.

Not only are bidets a sanitary way to use the restroom, but they're also more sanitary for everyone you come in contact with. When using a bidet, Dr. Connor says you are more likely to remove fecal matter than when using toilet paper alone. And because your hands do not have to come into contact with your bottom (like they may while wiping), you are less likely to spread fecal bacteria to the toilet bowl handle, bathroom doors and sink handles in the bathroom.

"Because touching surfaces in bathrooms after wiping is such a common method for the spread of germs and illness, bidets can be quite effective in reducing this spread," she adds.

But as with anything health-related, regular cleaning is essential. If the nozzle gets contaminated with fecal bacteria, it could cause infection. "If you are immunocompromised or at increased risk for infection, you may want to avoid using bidets or use a bidet that only you have access to for this reason," Dr. Connor warns.

Dr. Connor says one other crucial potential benefit of bidets is that for older adults with disabilities who may have trouble properly wiping after using the restroom, bidets can allow for more independence because they will need less assistance going to the bathroom, which can be a great self-esteem boost.

But if you suffer from anal incontinence or pruritis, she says you should talk to your doctor before using bidets, as they may worsen the condition.

According to Dr. Connor, the No. 1 most important consideration when looking for a bidet is one that will be very easy to sanitize regularly and easy to use safely. You should clean the bidet after each use and feel as if you have control over the functionality.

Bidets that can adjust the pressure of the spray and adjust the temperature of the water or only allow for cold water are essential for safety. How come? Dr. Connor says you do not want to scald or too harshly spray your most sensitive body parts while using a bidet.

You also want to adjust the bidet's water spray to a cooler temperature to prevent drying out your skin, because too-hot water will lead to dryness, which can cause itchiness and discomfort.

While some bidets require an electrical source, others only require a water source. Some can be installed in five minutes, while others are more complicated.

When shopping for a bidet, be honest about your handyman skills, and when in doubt, hire a professional to make sure installation is safe and accurate.

Depending on your personal needs and desires from a bidet, you may be comfortable investing in a pricier model. But if you are simply looking for a water rinse after using the restroom, more budget-conscious options are available.

When selecting your bidet, consider how often you'll use it and what improvement you'll see in your hygiene habits to guide your buying.
