If there's one luxury product everyone should try at least once in their lives, it's a bidet. Yes, it might be a littleee awkward the first few times you use one, but trust—bidets are totally worth it. The experience is like freshening up without having to actually jump in the shower.

Plus, bidets can actually help contribute to anal and vaginal health, says David Kaufman, MD, a urologist in New York City. "Bidets can be beneficial to helping reduce the spread of bacteria before and after sex, as well as to cutting down on irritation that can be caused by wiping too much."

Dr. Kaufman says he's seen many patients who've come to him because of significant irritation on their bottoms. "Most of the time it has to do with overzealous cleaning—wiping too vigorously with toilet paper or using wipes, which often contain harsh fragrances and chemicals," he explains.

So, if you're ready to ditch toilet paper for the sake of your butt (and not to mention—the planet), here are the best bidets you can buy right now, per customer reviews.

What is a bidet?

gfx

Bidets are specialized bathroom appliances that rinse off your booty after you do your business. In most Asian and European countries, bidets are not a luxury–but customary in most bathrooms.

Bidet attachments usually connect to a typical toilet seat and perform the same function as a bidet without you having to reinstall an entirely new toilet.

What are the benefits of using a bidet?

gfx

Bidets are definitely not a requirement for quality anal and rectal hygiene–but they never hurt. They're especially helpful if you are already prone to irritation down there, or find yourself over-wiping.

"I don't think there are any proven benefits to having a bidet per se, but there are certain situations or healthcare issues where I'd say they are helpful," says Tianyi Lu, MD, an assistant professor of colon and rectal surgery at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York.

Some health instances that might benefit from using a bidet include skin tags around the anus area (which sometimes can be left behind from hemorrhoids), Irritable Bowel Syndrome, perianal itching, or when prepping for a colonoscopy, according to Dr. Lu and Dr. Alex Ky, another professor of colon and rectal surgery at Mount Sinai Hospital.

They're also a great option for those who don't love using so much toilet paper, or prefer a deeper cleaning than what TP can give.

What should I look for a bidet?

gfx

When shopping for a bidet, it really all comes down to your personal preferences. However, there are a few things to keep in mind when looking for the perfect one.

Installation Requirements

Bidets can sometimes be tricky to install, as many of them connect to the plumbing in your toilet. In fact, if installed incorrectly, bidets can be prone to flooding. It's important to install a bidet correctly and to pick one that works well with your toilet. The best way to go about bidet installation is having a professional come and do it for you, but there are many models that can be put together without assistance.

Dr. Ky points out that some bidet attachments also require electricity to run properly, and many toilets in the United States do not have outlets close by to plug anything in. It's important to keep that in mind when looking for a bidet.

Temperature

When shopping for a bidet, a discounted price often means a lack of temperature controls. "You want lukewarm to warm temperatures. Don't go steaming hot," says Dr. Lu. Cold water is fine, but it might not be comfortable. If you think you'll be especially sensitive to cold water, it might be wise to opt for a temperature-controlled option.

Pressure

Similar to temperature, the pressure of the stream coming from your bidet is important, too. You don't want your bidet pressure to be too high, says Dr. Lu. Many bidet attachments include pressure controls, but it is important that your bidet is spraying at a speed you're comfortable with without harming your butt.

Cleaning

When using a bidet, keeping it clean is important to prevent the spread of any bacteria. Many bidet attachment models are self-cleaning, but if yours isn't, make sure to clean it regularly.
