For the same reason you might covet a silk pillowcase or robe, delicate silk pajamas are gentle on the skin, thanks to their extremely smooth surface. They are also moisture-wicking and feel cool to the touch, allowing you to doze off much easier. And, of course, the luster of the shimmery fabric and how it drapes on the body is hard to resist and replicate.
“Pure silk is pricey but breathable and super luxurious, so it may be worth the splurge, depending on your budget,” says Allison Berlin, founder and chief stylist at Style Made Simple.
When shopping for pure silk pajamas, Berlin says to identify the momme count, which indicates the weight of the silk. According to Berlin, higher-quality silk should have a momme count of at least 20 for a heavier, luxurious feel. Keep in mind, however, that “this number can be hard to find on product labels, so often the best thing to look out for when shopping is if the pj set is 100 percent silk and, ideally, washable,” she says.
Our Top Picks
If you’re looking to save, keep an eye out for silk blends and satin, which is a weave that results in a similar glossy appearance and can be made with numerous natural or synthetic materials. And in terms of finding the right fit, go one size up if you're not sure or you're between sizes. Unlike sturdier flannels, silk is a delicate material that doesn't have much natural stretch. Go too small, and you may end up with a ripped garment. Plus, who doesn't love a little extra room when lounging anyway?
For anyone eager to bask in total luxury, the sleepwear in our edit is worth the investment (plus, with clever styling, many of these separates can double as daytime pieces). From silk pajama tops to machine-washable silk sets to affordable silk blends—these are the silk pajamas we find positively sumptuous, from brands we love, like Cozy Earth, Lunya, Natori, and even some affordable finds.
