When it comes to perfecting your haircare and skin routine, you probably don't include what you're sleeping on as part of the equation. The truth is, you should consider the material of your pillowcases.

Yes, it may seem bougie—and, fine, it is a little bougie—but making the switch to a silk pillowcase can really help your hair and skin. Because silk is an extremely soft, smooth material, it doesn’t snag your hair or tug on your skin (something that can happen with regular cotton sheets and pillowcases). In turn, that can minimize frizz, breakage, and sometimes even wrinkles. Silk also isn't absorbent like cotton, so it won’t suck moisture from your hair and skin either. So that lovely (read: expensive) night cream you slather on in the P.M. won't rub off as you snooze.

How to shop for a silk pillowcase

When it comes to buying a silk pillowcases, the options can be confusing. First, let’s address the difference between silk and satin. Put simply: Silk is a fiber, while satin is a type of weave. So while satin pillowcases are smoother and less absorbent than regular cotton or flannel, they often include a blend of rayon, polyester, nylon, or other fibers. Because of this blend, though, satin pillowcases tend to be cheaper than silk.

If you do decide to invest in silk, one of the most important metrics to consider is the momme count, which reflects the weight of the silk. While you'll usually find a range between 15 and 30 momme, keep in mind that the average momme count is 19, which is perfect if it's your first time trying a silk pillowcase. If you're looking for something a bit more luxurious, pick an option that's at least 22 momme and made with high-quality mulberry silk.

To make sure nothing comes between you and your beauty sleep, we rounded up the best silk pillowcases for every budget.
