The Best Organic Sheets with GOTS and OEKO-TEX Certifications

Some people are probably asking the question, do you really need organic sheets? Well, let’s take a look at how most bed sheets are made.
Most manufacturers make bed sheets the cheapest way possible and that is with conventional cotton. This cotton is grown with synthetic pesticides which can cause health issues anywhere from asthma to cancer. In addition, these bedding companies want their sheets to be wrinkle-free therefore, they put chemicals on them like formaldehyde to get rid of that wrinkle effect. Is that all? Nope. Companies also use synthetic dyes that can be harmful to us as well. We spend a large portion of our day sleeping (well unless you have small children like me) so it’s best to make sure you are sleeping on a material that is free of pesticides and harmful chemicals.
How Do You Know If Sheets Are Organic?
To be sure you get a quality organic sheet, look for products that are either GOTS-certified or OEKO-TEX certified. I personally only buy GOTS-certified sheets if I buy cotton sheets. If I buy another material, OEKO-TEX is a must. I would not buy a sheet if they did not have these certifications even if they claim to be organic.
GOTS Certified: Stands for Global Organic Textile Standard. There are two different GOTS labels. The label ‘organic’ requires a minimum of 95% organic fibers and ‘made with organic materials’ requires at least 70% organic fibers. The use of toxic heavy metals, formaldehyde, aromatic solvents, and genetically modified organisms (GMO) is banned. In addition, GOTS products are also ethically made and good for the environment. The working conditions throughout the supply chain follow strict labor standards. They also require strict environmental standards, including having environmental management and wastewater treatment plans in place. As far as dyes go, they must be approved by a GOTS-approved certifier before their usage.
OEKO-TEX Certification: This certification ensures that every part of the product is free from harmful chemicals like formaldehyde and harsh dyes.
