The Best Baby Clothes To Keep Your Little One Cute And Comfy

One thing you learn quickly as a parent is the best baby clothes aren’t just cute and stylish—they’re practical. They keep your baby feeling comfortable, they make diaper changes easier and they hold up to many, many, many cycles through the washing machine and dryer. When one kid outgrows them, they can be passed down to your next or on to another family.

As a mom of two and shopping writer, I’m here to point you in the right direction as far as the best baby clothes are concerned, so you can focus on more important things, like enjoying your new babe. I’ve personally tried these brands with my own children and received firsthand recommendations from other parents. I also spoke with several experts to determine the best fabrics to shop for and how to dress our little ones so they can maintain the proper temperature, regardless of weather. Here are the best baby clothes brands in every category of infant dress.

Best Baby Clothes Overall

Hanna Andersson: Comfy, Elevated Pieces That Are Still Kid-Friendly

Hanna Andersson Baby Print French Terry Top & Pants Set

One of my favorite things about Hanna Andersson pieces are that they’re playful, but feel a bit more elevated. For instance, my older son has long loved trucks. While many options in this arena are not so aesthetically pleasing, Hanna Andersson truck prints are so cute that I get as excited about dressing him in them as he does. Plus, the fabric is supple, Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certified and doesn’t fade with repeated washes, which has made it a great option for hand-me-downs for our youngest. This baby clothing brand is loaded with basics, from sleepers to sweatshirts, but also plenty of luxe options like organic sweaters and sweet matching family ensembles. Many of the parents we interviewed love it too.

Little Sleepies: Incredibly Soft Patterns & Playful Prints Kids Love

MOST POPULAR

Little Sleepies Pink Gingham Zippy

As the name suggests, Little Sleepies are known for their soft-to-the-touch signature “Lunaluxe” bamboo fabric sleepers. They have fold over feet and sleeves that negate the need for socks or mittens, and they’re so stretchy that babies can wear them for longer than some other cotton options. The brand also makes great dresses, playsuits, overalls and adult clothes. These have been a family favorite of mine since the beginning thanks to the sweet prints and options for matching. The fabrics are also eczema-friendly, sensory-friendly (there are no tags) and some of their play clothes even contain UPF 25 coverage.

Ralph Lauren: Classic Pieces Ideal For Milestone Moments Or Everyday

Ralph Lauren Polo Baby Polo Shirt & Shorts Set

Ralph Lauren pieces are some of our favorites for holidays, family photos and special outings, but the brand (especially the Polo iteration) has beautiful everyday pieces as well. Thanks to the quality, these are definitely contenders with hand-me-down potential. The sizes typically range from 3 months to 24 months, so you might not find as many newborn options with this brand.

Best Budget Baby Clothes

Carter’s: Affordability And Comfort In Every Pick

Carters Baby 2-Piece Striped Romper & Hat Set

Carter’s is a great brand to turn to when stocking up on affordable baby clothes, from sleepers to bodysuits, matching sets and pants. They’re functional with a number of stylish designs and often turn into the workhorses of your little one’s wardrobe. Many of their pieces are also Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certified, meaning they’ve tested free of more than 400 possible substances. This matching set, suffice it to say, is a must for spring.

Cat & Jack: Home To The Cutest Sets

Cat & Jack Baby Girls' Strawberry Top & Bottom Set

Target’s Cat & Jack line has cute options at an easy-to-stomach price, and the outfits tend to be of good quality with the right amount of stretch. Many of the pieces take sensory sensitivities into consideration, so the tags and fabrics aren’t itchy or uncomfortable for babies and kids. Stock up on its ready-made outfit combos to show off at daycare and rest easy knowing you have a return window of up to a year.

H&M: Neutrals And Trendy Pieces At A Great Price

H&M Ribbed Cotton Set

H&M offers adorable basics, knits and printed outfits for babies at a fantastic price point in a wide-range of sizes. Take this Coastal Grandmother-inspired ensemble for example—it comes in sizes premature to 4T, making it a good option to keep buying on repeat or to buy for multiple kids if they appreciate matching (like mine). I love H&M for everyday picks, as well as trendy outfits and fun characters. A number of items come in multi-packs, making it simpler and more affordable to fill out your child’s wardrobe.

Gap: For Classic Pieces Without A Big Price Tag

Gap Baby Two-Piece Sweater Outfit Set

Gap is the place to go if you want classic pieces for your baby that deliver in terms of style and quality. They typically look far more pricey than they actually are (have you seen this sweater set?), making it easier to stock up on everything from basics to more premium outfits. The vibe is very Ralph Lauren but without the often hefty price tag, and the store pretty much always has sales going on.

Burt's Bees: Organic Cottons And A Plethora Of Prints

Burt's Bees Baby Baby Girls' Romper Jumpsuit

Burt’s Bees clothes and pajamas aren’t just stylish, they’re also made from 100% organic cotton and accessible price-wise. Many other options certified by the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) are pricey, but Burt’s Bees allows you to curate a wardrobe you can feel good about for your baby at a price that doesn’t hurt your wallet. The brand also features a wide array of sweet prints and styles, such as this adorable gingham number.

Zara: Basics And Trendy Pieces For All

Zara Plain Sweatshirt & Pants Plush Matching Set

Zara is one of our most frequented places as far as baby and toddler outfits go. My boys and I are partial to these basic sweatsuits, which are actually customizable so you can add their initials or little icons (think dinosaurs, suns or watermelons). Thanks to the oversized fit of most of Zara’s baby clothing, your baby won’t grow out of them as quickly.

Best Baby Clothes: Pajamas

Little Sleepies: The Softest Sleepers

Little Sleepies Heather Ribbed Zippy

Little Sleepies makes the cut in two categories because their pieces really are that great. Its pajamas are among our favorite because the bamboo viscose keeps babies cool in the summer and cozy in the winter, plus the fabric feels soft on their skin and stretches, making each sleeper wearable for up to three times as long as other brands. We also love the double zipper for diaper changes, the fold over mittens and cuffs and the fact that these pjs are never treated with chemicals or flame-retardants.

Hanna Andersson: Footless Jammies That Are Great For Sleep Or Floor Time

Hanna Andersson Baby Print 2-Way Zip Sleeper

Hanna’s baby sleepers and kids’ pajamas passionate fans, and you can usually resell these pjs in secondhand groups or pass them on to siblings and cousins. There’s a reason for all the fuss. Made from durable but soft organic cotton in wildly cute prints, the pajamas are worth stocking up on in all ages. For babies, you can choose from among zip-up footies or footless one-pieces or two-piece sets that can make diaper changes and floor time a bit easier. The fit tends to be generous, so you can get more wear out of each item.

Posh Peanut: Fun Prints And Soft, Stretchy Fabric Babies Love

Posh Peanut One Piece Pajamas

Made with a viscose from bamboo, the Posh Peanut pajamas feel baby soft (get it?) and stretch with your little one. This helps parents move more gracefully through growth spurts—because realizing your baby just grew out of all of their pajamas at once isn’t fun. Many of the one-piece styles have two-way zippers that make diapers changes much easier. These are among my eldest’s favorite pajamas, especially because he loves a family matching moment (I swear) and they have great adult options, too.

Magnetic Me: Buttery Soft Sleepers With Magnetic Closures

Magnetic Me Footie Pajamas

As the name suggests, Magnetic Me footie pajamas use a patented magnetic closure instead of a zipper or snaps that makes dressing wiggly babies that much easier. The pajamas are made from either eco-friendly Tencel or 100% organic GOTS certified cotton. Both fabrics are breathable and soft to the the touch, making them a great option for sensitive skin.

I’ve found the magnetic closure to be a more accessible option for caretakers with any hand or wrist issues as well. Just keep in mind that these garments are not safe to use around people who have a pacemaker, implanted defibrillator or other medical device that’s sensitive to magnets.

Wildbird: Soft, Stretchy Fabric With Elastic To Keep Feet In Place

Wildbird Cloudblend Footed Pajamas

Wildbird’s Cloudblend fabric is incredibly soft, breathable, moisture-wicking and stretchy, so your baby will feel comfortable and get more wear out of these pajamas. Parents like that the these jammies are certified non-toxic Oeko-Tex Certified and made from sustainable materials. I personally love these for my baby because they feature elastic behind on top of the back of the heel so baby’s feet stay in place. This was exceptionally helpful in the newborn days when babies prefer to stay scrunched up.

Best Baby Clothes: Onesies And Bodysuits

Carter's: Quality Onesies At A Budget-Friendly Price

Carter's 5-Pack Short Sleeve Bodysuits

The Carter’s name is practically synonymous with baby clothes, particularly when it comes to affordable basics for everyday wear (read: the bodysuit). Many parents dress their kids in head-to-toe Carter’s when they’re very young and the changes and blowouts are frequent, saving pricier options for special occasions. But Carter’s bodysuits, pants, onesies and sleepers aren’t just inexpensive, they’re also made with an eye toward what exhausted parents of newborns really need: easy-on clothing with snaps and zippers and cozy, stretchy fabric that sits nicely against your babe’s skin and doesn’t hold onto every stain. As I’ve recently learned, they hold up nicely even if you save them for baby number two.

Kissy Kissy: Luxe And Totally Worth The Splurge

Kissy Kissy Simple Stripes Footie

Kissy Kissy bodysuits are some of the softest available, made with pima Peruvian cotton. Available in blue, pink or yellow stripes, polka dots or solids, Kissy Kissy offers all the basic baby bodysuits and separates you’ll need (footies, onesies, kimonos and more) so you can create a capsule wardrobe of sorts. I can confirm the quality of the fabric is worth the higher price, as my youngest is currently wearing my older son’s Kissy Kissy hand-me-downs and they still look brand-new. It also doesn’t hurt that they’re among the most complimented pieces in my boys’ closet.

Kyte Baby: Soft Fabric And Cool Colors

Woman-Owned

Kyte Baby Bodysuit

The thing about Kyte Baby is that the bamboo-viscose blend it uses in all of its clothing feels like a cloud. It’s lightweight but warm and breathable. Kyte Baby offers a wide array of beautiful colors in their onesies, which feature shoulders that allow you to remove them by pulling down instead of having to pull them over your baby’s head. This comes is especially useful when blowouts happen. We also love their sleepers, sleeping bags and other beautifully made and cooling baby clothes.

Tabeeze: Makes Putting On A Onesie Seemless

Tabeeze Bottom-Up Bodysuit

When putting on a onesie, you often have to decide whether to put baby’s legs in first and try and wiggle it up their body or opt for the (in my opinion) more difficult over-the-head option. With Tabeeze onesies, either strategy is made far easier by snaps on the shoulders. Not only do they make dressing or undressing your baby—even in the case of a blowout—easier, but the easy shoulder release can be helpful with it’s time for skin-to-skin bonding. The cotton is 100% organic GOTS certified and for each onesie purchased, one is donated to the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital.

Bonsie: Makes Skin-To-Skin Easier Than Ever

Bonsie Skin-To-Skin Footie Bodysuit

The Bonsie Baby bodysuit is both stylish and practical, thanks to its kimono top that makes skin-to-skin bonding a cinch. The kimono opens and closes with a strip of Velcro-like fabric and the inner flap is secured with a tie closure, so you can easily open it for skin-to-skin contact without undressing your baby completely. I wish I found these earlier with my baby, as they’re especially useful in the newborn stage as you’re learning one another and working on initiating breastfeeding (if you choose to do so).

Best Cute And Trendy Baby Clothes

Miles The Label: Fashionable Prints And Chic Styles

Miles The Label Toucan Print Romper

Not only are the cute baby clothes from Miles The Label adorable, they’re also made with high-quality organic cotton. We love this Toucan romper, which makes for an easy summer outfit with no matching or planning required. It has snaps on the back and a pocket on the front, for extra cuteness. For the spicy kiddo, this same style is available in a hot sauce print, and for the sweetheart we also love the pineapple print playsuit.

Zara: On-Trend Separates & Chic Basics

Zara Embroidered Romper

Whether you’re looking for an oversized matching sweatsuit for baby, a knit ruffled sweater or a darling bubble for a spring outing, Zara is the place to go. The brand offers a wide array of styles at various prices and in a number of gender-neutral styles. I’m partial to the brand’s pants, knits and on-trend tops, which are soft and smile-inducing. Plus, I find that the sizes offer a bit more wiggle room, so that my sons are able to wear pieces for longer than with other brands. I kept all of my elder son’s pieces to hand down to my little one and they still look beautiful years later.

Janie And Jack: Classic And Well-Made Pieces

Janie And Jack Baby Lion Matching Set

With sizes for babies to 18-year-olds, Janie And Jack is a one-stop shop for beautifully made pieces. It’s frankly hard to control myself when shopping its website because everything is just so adorable, whether you’re looking for an outfit for celebrating a special occasion or stepping out to a play date. In addition to being incredibly stylish, the Janie And Jack pieces I purchased for my older son withstood all of the messes that typically come with babies and were passed down, which speaks to the quality. I love the brand’s attention to detail and preppy aesthetic.

Angel Dear: Cute Prints, Fun Styles

Angel Dear Tutu Bubble

While Angel Dear has plenty of items that are far more practical than this delightful tutu, it was hard to pass on highlighting just how adorable this option is. With everything from charming airplane prints to heart festooned bubbles, Angel Dear has style in spades. The company is especially known for its modern sensibility and fun, unique prints.

Tea Collection: Bright Colors And Prints With Incredible Quality

Tea Collection Pocket Shortie Baby Romper

With each new collection inspired by a different country, Tea Collection is the ideal choice for little globetrotters. I dress my boys in Tea Collection on the regular in part because of the vibrant prints and eclectic pieces, but also because the fantastic quality really holds up (even after a day at preschool for my older one). Other parents on the Forbes staff report the same experience. The matching family options are certainly an added bonus and it’s one of the only brands that consistently fit my long, lean kids perfectly.

Jacadi Paris: Elevated Options Perfect For Special Occasions

Jacadi Baby Girl Romper

The details of Jacadi pieces really set them apart. Take, for instance, the precious scalloped poplin collar, the covered snap buttons and the “toute petite” embroidery on this striped romper. The little flourishes really do make all the difference, even if the oftentimes heftier price tags is better as just an occasional splurge rather than a wardrobe staple.

Best Organic Baby Clothes

Monica + Andy: Prints Galore

Monica + Andy Out & About Romper

No matter your child’s style, Monica + Andy has a print that will suit them. Does your baby really like your French Bulldog? Monica + Andy has an adorable onesie to celebrate that. You name it, they probably have a soft-to-the-touch organic cotton outfit for you and your baby to enjoy. I personally love how easy their pieces are to put on and take off as well.

Pehr: Sweet, Serene And Soft

Pehr Magical Forest Ruffle Romper

Available in a wide array of soft, serene colors and prints, Pehr’s range of infant clothing is always a great choice. The fabrics are incredibly comfortable and durable, and you’ll reach for pieces from this brand again and again. With little details like ruffles or kimono ties, Pehr baby clothes are equally suitable for a special occasion or a day lounging around the house.

Honest Baby: Great Bundle And Color Options

Honest Baby 10-Pack Organic Cotton Bodysuits

Especially in the beginning, you can never have too many baby onesies. These Honest Baby ones are durable, soft, made from organic cotton and come in every color of the rainbow. I also love that are available in big sets, so you can save a few minutes instead of hunting for onesies one by one.

Primary: Bright Hues On Soft Fabrics

Primary Baby Sweatshirt Romper

Cozy but lightweight, fans of Primary especially love its sweatshirt rompers for playtime, outings or naps. Parents also love that the center snap is gold to make alignment easier when snapping baby back in post diaper change. The fabrics are soft, the colors are vibrant and they make for great staples in your baby’s wardrobe.

Mori: Supple Organic Cotton That Stands The Test Of Time

Mori Clever Zip Baby Pajamas

The Mori Clever Pajamas are among my family’s most-used bodysuits because even though they’re technically pajamas, the quality of the cotton is so luxe that they look polished. This saves me the trouble of changing my baby’s outfit before taking our preschooler to class. The cotton is thick but breathable, so I know the little one will be comfortable on the journey there and back. Like several other brands on this list, we saved our Mori pieces to hand down to my baby and they still look and feel new.

Best Baby Clothes: Socks And Underwear

Old Navy: Bargains On Basics You'll Love

Old Navy Unisex Ankle Socks (4-Pack)

If you think adult socks get lost in the wash a lot, baby socks are about to give you a run for your money. With that in mind, definitely don’t spend a lot on them. These Old Navy ones are soft, breathable and a great deal. They have enough stretch to keep them on your baby’s foot, and I appreciate the sizing listed on the footpad to both alert you that you’ve got the right sizes matched up and to distinguish them from siblings’ socks.

Hanes: Tried And True Undies For A Reason

Hanes Toddler Boys' Briefs (6-Pack)

Once your baby becomes a toddler and is ready to explore the wild world of potty training, reach for these underwear. They have additional padding for comfort and to help contain accidents. They’re also 100% cotton, tagless and breathable with a mid-rise fit for all-around comfort—all important qualities in a first pair of big kid underwear. The fun prints certainly don’t hurt either.

Bombas: Socks Softs As Can Be

Bombas Baby Sock (6-12 Months)

Bombas socks are extremely soft and lightweight so baby’s feet will stay cozy but won’t get too warm. It also helps that for each pair of socks purchased, one is donated to a child in need. There’s no seam to irritate sensitive toes and the cotton blend keeps small feet comfy and cool. While they’re a bit pricier, the quality is definitely there.

Burt's Bees: Affordable And Organic

Burt's Bees Baby Baby Socks With Non-Slip Grips

These are our household’s go-to, as they’re affordable but made from organic cotton with recycled polyester grips on the feet. Both in ankle and crew versions, these stay on, don’t stretch out after repeated wears or squeeze at sweet little ankles and legs. They’re also long-lasting in that the sizing ranges from 0 to 3 months and 3 to 12 months. I appreciate that Burt’s Bees uses sustainable farming practices and provides fair working conditions.

Best Baby Clothes: Outerwear

L.L. Bean: Outerwear For Every Climate

L.L. Bean Quilted Quarter-Snap Pullover

Maine-based retailer L.L. Bean sells a selection of its adult winter gear in children’s, toddler and baby sizes. We love its jackets, snowpants, mittens and of course, adorable baby buntings. Although the weather is getting warmer, L.L. Bean is a great option for lightweight outerwear or to stock up items to keep them warm and dry during a cold snap.

Patagonia: Long-Lasting Quality With Eco-Friendly Manufacturing

Patagonia Baby Down Sweater Vest Jacket

This down filled Patagonia baby vest got a great deal of use in our household. Its outer nylon shell is water-repellent, and the pockets can even pull closed to keep your baby’s hands warm. It’s the ideal layering piece, which is key to making sure your baby is the perfect temperature year-round. I also love that the shell is made from postconsumer recycled nylon and recycled fishing nets, to help reduce ocean plastic pollution.

North Face: Quality Options That Last

The North Face Baby Antora Rain Jacket

Prep your baby for April showers with this darling North Face rain jacket. Breathable and made from 100% recycled fabrics, this is a great option to get your little one through spring, fall and winter (with some additional layering). Since the sizing is also rather generous, you’ll likely be able to use it for longer—several seasons in our case.

Mango: Stylish And Cozy Jackets

Mango Quilted Jacket

If you’re hoping for something a bit more stylish and a little less outdoors-y, Mango is the move for baby outerwear. The brand has great options for baby boys and girls and in colors and styles that look far more high-end than their actual price tag. These are also a good option for those in warmer climates looking for transitional jackets.

Why Trust Forbes Vetted

At Forbes Vetted, we’ve research, test and recommend a wide range of baby and parenting gear, from maternity jeans to swaddles. We always take care to thoroughly research a product before recommending it, especially to ensure it’s safe for your baby.

The author of this article, Lex Goodman, is a lifestyle writer and frequently covers baby gear for Vetted. Goodman uses her experience as a mom of two to inform her picks for the best baby clothes, recommending clothes that have (and continue) to work well for her family. For this article, she also spoke to Nicole Makowka, head of education at Loom, a platform that provides health education and information to women, including those who are pregnant and parenting.

How We Chose The Best Baby Clothes

To choose the best baby clothes, I relied heavily on my own experience buying baby clothes for both of her children, as well as recommendations from other parents. Many of the clothes on this list have been worn by my sons, and some have even graduated to hand-me-downs, a testament to their quality.

When recommending baby clothes, I took care to include various styles for various preferences, aimed to cater to all kinds of budgets. I also included options that are Oeko-Tex and GOTS certified, so you can dress baby with peace of mind about fabric safety and sustainability. I interviewed Makwoka to get expert insight on what to look for when registering for best baby clothes, baby clothes sizing and more.

What Baby Clothes Should You Register For?

Nicole Makowka, head of education at Loom, an educational platform for women at all stages of motherhood, suggests that you keep it simple in regards to baby clothes on your registry. “Focus on basics, multiple sizes and neutrals,” she says. “It's tempting to just think about the newborn phase, but babies grow quickly, and it's so handy to have a few sizes up already in the closet. Think about how old baby will be when the weather changes and adjust the sizes on the registry to match.” So, if you have a spring baby, you’ll want their winter clothes to be sized for 6 to 9 months. With that in mind, you’ll want to add onesies, bodysuits with long and short sleeves, pants, tops, sweaters and outerwear to your list. Socks will also come in handy.

“With sustainability and community in mind, consider borrowing some gently loved clothes from friends and family when possible,” Makowka adds. It’s good to keep in mind that baby clothing is one of the most popular baby shower gifts, so you may get some off-registry clothes as well.

What Kind Of Onesies Are Best For Babies?

“Like so many decisions in parenting, these choices are all about personal preference and convenience,” says Makowka. Many parents find that onesies with a few snaps in the diaper area and flap closures at the shoulders are easier to remove (pull down instead of over the head) in the case of a blowout. These also make standard diaper changes easier.

Makowka says pajamas “with double zippers in the front are a great option” because they “can make those sleepy nighttime diaper changes so much more convenient than trying to match snaps. That way, you can just unzip the bottom for a nighttime diaper change and the baby stays cozy and warm up top.”

How Do Baby Clothes Sizes Work?

Most baby clothes are sized by age. So if you have a newborn, they’ll most likely either wear newborn size or 0 to 3 months. Once they reach 3 months old, they might move up to 3-6 months or even a 6-months size and so on. Of course, some babies will be larger or smaller than the age size, so it’s a good idea to have a wide array of sizes available.
