Guess Adopts Interloop’s Upcycled Banana Fiber

Guess is bananas for Interloop’s Loomshake technology.

The Los Angeles-based jean brand will introduce Interloop’s innovative banana fiber in its Fall 2024 collection. Scheduled to ship in September, it will feature a blend of cotton, post-consumer recycled cotton and upcycled banana plant waste.

Loomshake is Interloop’s solution for agriculture waste. Pakistan grows around 154,000 tons of the fruit each year, producing 10 million tons of production waste.

In addition to supporting Interloop’s goal to have 70 percent of its materials be sustainable or sustainably sourced by 2025, Loomstate provides farmers an added source of income since they can sell what would usually be a wasted byproduct of their crops.

Interloop is a Pakistan-based, wholly integrated producer of denim, activewear, apparel, and hosiery for such clients as Nike, Adidas and H&M. The partnership with Guess marks a strategic progression for the company by extending the commercial application of Loomshake.

The fiber was used in socks by sustainable clothing brand Dinner Service NY last year. Interloop said the technology is poised to “redefine the denim manufacturing landscape,” however.

The weaver teamed with sustainable denim consultancy Simply Suzette last fall to launch Unpeeled, a concept collection of denim, hosiery and knitwear made with the banana fiber. The collection’s fabrics were composed of 20 percent Loomshake and 80 percent cotton. It included jeans, a belted jumpsuit, a denim shacket and a denim skirt.
