In a post-COVID world, some of the biggest trends moving forward will focus on how to be around others safely. According to the CDC, contracting COVID-19 from surfaces is highly unlikely, but air contamination still continues to be a concern. That means air filters are going to be big, and Brondell has already gotten the ball rolling with the Brondell Pro AG+ air purifier. This device has been proven to eliminate COVID-19 along with a slew of other viruses.

How It Works

There are a number of ways the Brondell Pro AG+ purifies air. The first is its series of filters it forces air through. There are three layers of filters built into the Pro AG+, the pre-filter, the high-efficiency H12 HEPA Grade filter, and the nano-crystalline filter.

The pre-filter is mostly for the big stuff like hair, large dust particles and things like that. This doesn't disinfect the air, but it is great for catching the general junk floating around that you don't want to be breathing in.

The real action for the Brondell Pro AG+ comes from the other two filters. The high-efficiency H12 HEPA Grade filter can capture much smaller particles than the pre-filter. The H12 HEPA filter is said to be able to capture particles as small as 0.01 nanometers. The silver ions in the filter are also said to be capable of eliminating a number of viruses including the coronavirus, mold spores and other bacteria and viruses.

The final filter built into the Brondell Pro AG+ is the nano-crystalline filter. This contains non-metallic minerals such as Sepiolite and diatomaceous earth. These combine to create nanocrystalline materials capable of absorbing harmful and smelly gases like formaldehyde, benzene and ammonia.

Still More Safety

Alongside those physical filters, the Brondell Pro AG+ has two other types of filtration that can be toggled on and off. There is a UV lamp that can be turned on to help eliminate any viruses. UV-C light is a fairly common strategy for eliminating viruses like COVID-19, and has been used in places like the New York City subway to help disinfect surfaces and the air.

The second filtration type is plasma purification. A plasma generator pumps out positive and negative ions that neutralize in the air. According to Brondell, this should result in nearby microorganisms being destroyed by the energy created by the ion neutralization. Additionally, Brondell mentioned that the plasma generator creates more negative ions than positive ones, and the extra negative ions help to remove smoke, dust, and smells.

Instant Set-Up

Getting the Brondell Pro AG+ up and running takes virtually no effort at all. Once unboxed, simply remove the covers on the filters and pop them in. From there, plug the Pro AG+ into the wall, and you're all set.

Using the Pro AG+ also couldn't be more simple. The power button is located right on the top of the device, and once pushed it lights up the rest of the control panel. There are six buttons alongside the power button, each corresponding to a different mode or setting.

The Brondell Pro AG+ is a fairly large unit. It's a little over two feet tall and weighs just under 20 pounds. Thankfully, there is a handle built into the back of the unit to make it easier to carry around. It's also fairly easy to just slide around if need be. The included power cable uses a basic two-prong plug and is around six feet long.

Different Modes For Different Needs

There are a number of different modes with the Brondell Pro AG+. Users can change the fan speed, set a timer, put the Pro AG+ into Sleep Mode, activate UV or plasma filtration and set a child lock.

As far as fan speed goes, the Brondell Pro AG+ has three different speed settings along with an automatic mode. Automatic mode adjusts the speed of the fan based on a detected PM2.5 reading from the air around the Pro AG+. If the air quality drops, the fan increases its speed to filter more air through faster. The faster the fan goes, the louder the Pro AG+ becomes. At max speed, the Pro AG+ can get fairly loud, which could be a concern in smaller spaces.

The timer mode on the Brondell Pro AG+ works as expected. Users can set a timer for the number of hours the Pro AG+ will operate. The device will shut itself off once the timer runs out. Similarly, the child lock function disables the buttons on the Pro AG+ so little ones can't accidentally mess with any settings.

The Brondell Pro AG+'s sleep mode is great for those who want to use the air purifier in a house or apartment. This drops the fan to its lowest setting and turns off the lights on the outside of the Pro AG+. Unfortunately, there isn't a timer for Sleep Mode to turn on and off, but all that is required to get Sleep Mode activated is pushing a single button.

Lastly, the UV light button and the plasma button turn those filter systems on and off.

Reusability

Like with most other filter systems, the filters in the Brondell Pro AG+ will eventually need to be replaced. One great aspect of the Pro AG+ is that two of the three filters can be easily reused, and a timer is built into the air purifier to let users know when replacements and maintenance are needed.

The pre-filter can become too clogged up with the large particles that are filtered through it, so all that's needed is to vacuum the pre-filter every now and then to keep air flowing smoothly. Additionally, the nano-crystalline filter only needs to be exposed to sunlight and fresh air every two months or so to get a recharge.

That said, it's still recommended that all three filters get replaced every eight to 12 months. Filter packs that contain all three filters are available through Brondell for $100.

But Does It Work?

As I have mentioned in all of my previous sanitization/purification product reviews, I don't have access to my own laboratory. That means I can't run my own tests to independently verify if these products are actually capable of disinfecting and sanitizing to the levels they claim. That said, Brondell has made it easy to see all the test results and certifications for the Pro AG+, including the FDA certification that classifies the Pro AG+ as a Grade II medical device.

Here's what I can say about the effectiveness of the Pro AG+. My fiance and I suffer from allergies year round, and find ourselves waking up most mornings needing to blow our noses and clear out other phlegm. It's very attractive, I know.

When using the Pro AG+ in our bedroom, we have found ourselves regularly waking up each morning feeling a little less stuffed up. In fact, my fiance remarked that she slept remarkably well with the plasma filter turned on in addition to the normal filters. While I can't say with certainty that Brondell's claims of coronavirus protection work, I can say that using the Pro AG+ at night has resulted in better sleep and less severe allergy symptoms.

Big Price Tag

All of this filtration and safety from COVID sounds great, but it does come at a somewhat steep price. The Brondell Pro AG+ retails for $650, which includes one set of the three filters. As previously mentioned, replacement filter packs also cost an additional $100 per pack of three.

Even compared to Brondell's other air purifiers, the Pro AG+ comes in at a much higher price. Of course, the Pro AG+ offers more than those other machines, but it's still a hefty sum. Considering that the Pro AG+ provides protection for areas of around 500 square feet, that may be great for small businesses, but a little overkill for an apartment. Make sure you have a need for such a powerful air purifier before making the big purchase.

Final Thoughts

The Brondell Pro AG+ seems like an incredibly powerful device. It has shown itself to be capable of eliminating COVID-19 in the air within 15 minutes and can keep an area over 500 square feet clear of contamination. That's a lot of muscle, but it isn't too surprising considering the air purifier is over two feet tall.

While the Brondell Pro AG+ has made sleeping at night a better experience, and has helped with my allergy symptoms, its price and power make it better suited for larger spaces like a small business or office. The Pro AG+ almost feels like too much of an air purifier for a small home or apartment, like trying to garden with a full-sized shovel.

For $650, the Brondell Pro AG+ is certainly capable of keeping the air in a home clean, but less expensive options (including this other air purifier from Brondell that is only $140) are capable of offering similar features for less. Those other options don't have all of the bells and whistles the Brondell Pro AG+ has, but should still help keep you safe.

The Brondell Pro AG+ is available exclusively from Brondell for right now, and will be available at other retailers soon.
