40 Best Lunar New Year Gifts In 2024 To Greet The Year Of The Dragon

Lunar New Year, also known as Chinese New Year or Tet, is a time of celebration for many East Asian families. The 15 days’ worth of festivities (which starts on February 10 in 2024) are filled with traditional customs, feasts and, of course, plenty of gift-giving. The best Lunar New Year gifts, according to Maison Miru founder Trisha Okubo, are those that symbolize good luck, abundance and prosperity. “Think foods, flowers or plants—and the gift that can’t go wrong: money in a red envelope,” she says. Our favorite gifts that fit the bill include Kee Wah Bakery’s “Better Hong Kong” pastry gift box, The Sill’s fortune-signaling Money Tree and fresh new bills delivered in Lovepop’s pop-up version of the traditional red envelope known as “hongbao.”

Other traditional gift-worthy items include oranges (we like this Harry & David fruit basket), symbolic pieces like this Lo & Sons zodiac animal charm or anything that comes packaged in the auspicious colors of red and gold. As for things to avoid: Experts we consulted advise avoiding the color white, time-related items (like watches) and sharp objects. Taking these tips into consideration, we’ve gathered 40 of our favorite Lunar New Year gift ideas for 2024 to get you started—including many from AAPI-owned businesses. Ahead, you’ll find festive treats, gorgeous tableware, zodiac-inspired pieces and more for everyone on your list.

Best Traditional Lunar New Year Gifts

A Classic Monetary Gift For Good Luck

Year of the Dragon Lunar New Year Money Holder

Okubo calls the fresh bills stuffed inside red envelopes “the gift that can’t go wrong.” This innovative version from 3D greeting card company Lovepop features a design that makes the bills inside pop up into a fun design when your recipient pulls on a tab. If you do end up gifting “hongbao,” though, you might keep one thing in mind, says celebrity gifting pro Nina Vargas: “They are typically given by adults or married couples to children, unmarried individuals or younger family members as a gesture of good luck and blessings for the new year.”

A Lucky Charm Of Their Favorite Zodiac Animal

Lo & Sons Zodiac Charm Collection

Chiang also recommends gifting symbolic items for the Year of the Dragon: “Look for gifts that carry positive symbolism, such as items with images of the Chinese zodiac animal of the year or symbols of good fortune, longevity and prosperity.” Our pick is this dragon charm from Chinese-American luggage brand Lo & Sons, part of a collection of zodiac key chain charms that clasp onto any bag. Bonus: The textured leather is scratch- and weather-resistant.

A Box Of Sweet And Juicy Oranges To Wish Them Joy

SolZest Mandarin Oranges

Tangerines, oranges and other citrus fruits are some of the most common food gifts given on Lunar New Year; their color symbolizes prosperity, and they’re believed to bring happiness and good luck. Gift this pack of more than a dozen easy-peel SolZest oranges, which combine the best of two worlds—they’re a hybrid of Temple oranges and Dancy tangerines to give them their sweet flavor.

A Celebratory Outfit For Your Pup That Also Keeps Them Warm

Gives Back

PetTang Lunar New Year Pet Festival Costume

Another foolproof gift Chiang recommends is traditional Chinese clothing: “Consider gifting items like a ‘qipao’ or ‘cheongsam,’ also known as a tang suit,” he says. But who says your pet can’t join in on the festivities with a tang suit of their own? This handmade Chinese New Year festival costume that is somehow both elegant and adorable is just the outfit your furry friend needs to celebrate. Made from vibrantly dyed cotton, the costume is also adorned with a Chinese dish flower buckle and plush lined to keep your pet warm.

A Beautiful Box Of Premium Chocolate-Covered Dried Fruits

Compartés Chocolate-Covered Fruits Assortment

Luckily, for a limited time, Chinese-American brand MìLà is partnering with Phở Bắc, Seattle’s legendary (and James Beard Award-winning) pho shop to create a scrumptious fusion: slow-simmered southern-style Vietnamese beef pho encased in MìLà’s signature delicate dumpling skin. Traditional Korean Flavors For Ice Cream Lovers

You’ll find flavors like Black Sesame, Tumeric Honeycomb, Golden Sesame and Toasted Rice, made using a traditional Korean rice snack.

Sông Cái Việt Nam Dry Gin

For the adventurous spirits drinker in your life, this singular Vietnamese gin should hit the spot, especially when toasting the arrival of the Year of the Dragon. The liquor is infused with the flavors of 16 mountain botanicals (such as coriander, aniseed and vanilla) foraged from Vietnam’s Northern Highlands, then distilled in small batches in direct-fired copper pot stills. The result? A uniquely bright, floral gin to refresh their palate in the new year.

Chinese Herb-Inspired, Gut-Friendly Drinks—That Taste Like Fruity Soda

Editor’s Pick

Wildwonder 12-Can Variety Pack

You wouldn’t think that Wildwonder’s sparkling drinks—with their peppy-sounding flavors, fruity sweetness and colorful packaging—are actually good for your gut. But Founder Rosa Li actually crafted them with stomach-friendly prebiotics and probiotics inspired by the Chinese herbal knowledge passed down from her grandma. This variety pack includes three cans each of flavors Strawberry Passion, Guava Rose, Peach Ginger and (our favorite) Mango Gold. We also highly recommend the latest flavor, Pineapple Paradise, if you can’t get enough.

Best Lunar New Year Home And Family Gifts

A Gift For Plant Parents That Symbolizes Growth

The Sill Money Tree Plant

A money tree plant, which is also known as a prosperity tree in Chinese culture, makes a great Lunar New Year gift for 2024. As its name implies, the money tree plant represents growth, abundance and good luck, says Malarkey. To get even more festive, she suggests decorating it with red envelopes or miniature symbolic ornaments.

Since opening its doors in the 1890s, Wing On Wo & Co. has become a New York City institution. The Perfectly Sized Bowls For Rice, Snacks—And Even Jewelry

The Bap Bowl

Since food is a big part of the Lunar New Year festivities, it’s appropriate to gift a beautifully crafted set of Korean-inspired bowls to hold all those edible goodies. Material Kitchen’s bap bowls (“bap” stands for rice) are made from Korean clay and are just the right size for spices, sauces, nuts and—you guessed it—the perfect serving of rice. They’re versatile too: The decorative bowls can even be used to hold matchsticks or jewelry.

A Children's Book Subscription For Bilingual Tykes

Immigrant-Owned

Curio Simplified Chinese Buds (0-3 years)

If you’re looking for a gift that’s a little more out of the box, Chiang recommends the following: “Choose a subscription box that aligns with the recipient's interests [or] invest in language-learning apps or cultural experiences to deepen their understanding of East Asian traditions.” Curio, a bilingual children’s book subscription founded by Hera Li for her first-generation Chinese-American kids, checks off those boxes. It’s especially appropriate for celebrants who want to teach their kids (from ages 0 to 10) Traditional and Simplified Chinese, as well as the nuances of Chinese culture. The brand works with leading publishers and language educators to curate both award-winning books and learning resources—so your giftee won’t have to do the time-consuming research.

A Cleaning Kit That’s Sustainable And Stylish

Sustainable

That is, basically everything they’ll need to keep their home spotless.

A Grounding, Heart-Opening Perfume Oil Powered By Rose Quartz

Editor’s Pick

Pink Moon Over The Moon Perfume Oil

In addition to conventional Lunar New Year gifts, Chiang also recommends wellness and relaxation items, like spa vouchers or aromatherapy sets. Go beyond traditional oranges with this citrus-scented and rose quartz-infused perfume oil from Pink Moon, a company whose formulas are inspired by Traditional Chinese Medicine and other healing practices. Founder and Reiki-certified practitioner Lin Chen tells us, “Rose quartz promotes good vibes and infinite peace, purifies and opens the heart and soothes the mind.” The brand recommends rolling over your pulse points and heart center.

To Make This The Year Of Glowing, Resilient Skin

Fresh Limited-Edition Tea Elixir Skin Resilience Activating Serum

If your recipient’s intention for the new lunar year is to reset their skincare regimen, you can’t go wrong gifting formulas that boost the skin’s ability to bounce back from environmental stressors. Take Fresh’s Tea Elixir Skin Resilience Activating Serum, part of the brand’s limited-edition Dragon Collection. The brightly packaged serum is powered by Fresh’s proprietary Adaptive Phytocompound Tea technology, as well as pore-reducing niacinamide and barrier-strengthening ceramide 3, to help the skin combat signs of aging.

The Healing Power Of Traditional Herbs—In The Form Of Tasty Gummies

Reprise Lunar New Year Longevity Set

Gifting loved ones foods like ginseng, honey and healing herbs to wish them good health and prosperity is a beloved tradition for many. That was the case for Kai Lim, co-founder of Reprise, a company specializing in Chinese Medicine-inspired gummy supplements. “My mom would often brew these potent, bitter herbs, and I would dread them because they were too bitter,” he tells us. To get the health benefits of those herbs without the bitterness, opt to gift the brand’s Lunar New Year Longevity Set of tasty gummies instead, which includes naturally energizing Super Focus Gummies (powered by ginseng and reishi mushrooms) and anti-aging Goji Berry Gummies.

Best Lunar New Year Fashion Gifts

Cute, Festive Hair Clips To Celebrate In Style

A Chic JW PEI Vegan Handbag In A Lucky Hue

JW PEI Gabbi Ruched Hobo Handbag

The style and accessory buff in your circles will enjoy something fitting for the Chinese New Year 2024 parties but that can also be used year-round. A chic handbag like this one checks off two criteria Chiang looks for in a gift: practicality and quality. “Asian culture often prioritizes efficiency,” he says. This JW PEI bag isn’t only stylish, colorful and practical, but it’s also made from vegan leather and produced by an Asian American-owned company.

A Subtly Distinctive Ring In Lucky Colors

Mejuri Boa Gemstone Coil Ring In Garnet

“Red and gold are considered lucky and auspicious colors in Chinese culture, especially during Lunar New Year,” says Chiang. You can choose to either wrap your gifts in these favorable colors or, for something a little fancier, present them with unique jewelry like the Gemstone Coil Ring from woman-owned Mejuri. Crafted with 18kt gold vermeil and adorned with a natural garnet stone, the serpent-inspired piece makes a statement but is still subtle enough for everyday wear.

A Practical, Festive Scarf From A Sustainable AAPI Brand

Gives Back

Kerisma Halona Scarf In Orchid

“Practical gifts that reflect quality and good taste are generally appreciated,” Chiang says. And if those gifts can be used both during the Chinese New Year 2024 celebrations and in one’s daily life? Even better. Enter: this chic and vibrant scarf by AAPI-owned brand Kerisma, which fits the bill. Like the rest of the fashion company’s offerings, this piece is made from recycled and up-cycled materials, all while adding a touch of elegance to any ensemble. Plus, its softness makes it the perfect travel blanket.

A Simple But Elegant Necklace With Positive Symbolism

Woman-Owned

Year of the Dragon Limited Edition Pendant Necklace

Meaningful items emblazoned with positive symbols, especially images of the zodiac animal of the year, are foolproof Lunar New Year gifts. This 18kt gold-plated chain necklace by Seree, which features an embossed dragon and two stunning blue zircons on a rectangular pendant, is an elegant example. The dragon symbol imparts a sense of strength and good fortune, but the piece is minimally designed enough to make it suited for daily wear.

What Is Lunar New Year And Why Is It Celebrated?

Lunar New Year, also known as Chinese New Year and Tet in Vietnam, is a period when many East Asian cultures spend time resting and feasting with family, honoring ancestors and of course, giving and receiving gifts that symbolize luck and prosperity. The celebration, which often lasts for 15 days, marks the beginning of the new lunar year, which falls on February 10 this year. Similar to Western new year celebrations, Lunar New Year is also a time to reset, set positive intentions and position yourself to prosper for the year ahead, according to Maison Miru’s Okubo, who is of Chinese and Japanese descent. “You want to clean your life and home of evil spirits and bad luck so you can make room for good luck in the new year,” she explains—which is why one popular custom for Chinese New Year is to physically clean and decorate the home.

Remember, however, that when gifting during Lunar New Year celebrations, different East Asian cultures have certain customs, activities and beliefs unique to their region—so take time to research or ask your recipient about the nuances of how their family celebrates. Giftpack’s Chiang, who is of Taiwanese heritage, tells us: “The thoughtfulness behind the gift is what matters most. Taking the time to understand and appreciate the cultural significance of Lunar New Year will enhance the meaningfulness of your gift.”

What Are Examples Of Traditional Chinese New Year Gifts?

“Lunar New Year gifts are about good luck and prosperity,” says Okubo, who lists foods, flowers, plants and the colors green and yellow as examples. Food is also a popular gift that Okubo always turns to, particularly teas and chocolates from her favorite AAPI owned and operated businesses.

Chiang also recommends gifting items in auspicious colors—red and gold in particular. “Opt for gifts wrapped in red or gold paper or include these colors in the gift itself. Red envelopes (‘hongbao’) with money are a traditional and welcome gift.”

Other traditional Lunar New Year gifts include symbolic items (particularly ones that have the zodiac animal of the year, which in 2024 is the dragon), candies or other festive treats, practical and high-quality gifts, dried fruits and nuts, gift baskets (especially ones with an assortment of snacks), traditional Chinese clothing like tang suits and festive Lunar New Year decor like red lanterns.

Are Lunar New Year And Chinese New Year The Same?

Yes: Lunar New Year is also referred to as Chinese New Year by observers of Chinese heritage. But as Chiang mentioned earlier, there are countless differences in traditions and practices even among Chinese regions.

What Are Considered Taboo Lunar New Year Gifts?

When looking for Chinese New Year gifts, steer clear of the color white, which Okubo says is traditionally associated with death in many Asian cultures (yes, white wrapping paper counts). Chiang also advises skipping things like watches and knives: “In many East Asian cultures, giving gifts associated with time is considered inauspicious, as it symbolizes running out of time. Sharp objects like knives are associated with cutting ties, so they are best avoided.”
